My advice with the TRANS. FAILSAFE PROG message is always to get the codes read using Testbook/T4 (rather than Autologic) to eliminate both the inhibitor switch (P0705 - mentioned on the previous page by John) and the transfer box shift motor potentiometer (P0720/1, etc.) first before concentrating on the transmission itself.

I also have problems with the gearshift, very stiff/clunky in "PRND" mode, and won't locate PARK properly (possible park pin bent?). Could this have any bearing on it?

Yep, did that when I posted, thanks scarey . Experience is the only genuine knowledge, but as time passes, I have forgotten more than I can remember Volvo V70 P2 2006 2.4 Petrol 170bhp Estate SE MG Midget Mk1 1962 Previous: L322 Range Rover TDV8 3.6 2008; L322 Range Rover TD6 3.0 2002; P38A Range Rover V8 1999 |

If you can manage without your car for a few days you could post the motor to me and I’ll check it for you (FOC, obviously, if you’ll pay for postage) - it’s held onto the transfer box by just three bolts. If it is faulty I’ve had limited success at fixing them, but no promises. It’s very unfortunate that the rotary potentiometers are unavailable separately.

Just speculating, but Land Rover sold around 150,000 L322’s between 2002 and 2006 when the major driveline changes were made and the NV225 transfer box was replaced by the Magna Steyr DD295 unit. The NV225 ‘box was only ever used in the L322 (the X5 used a single-speed version – NV125) and, as far as I’m aware, this shift motor was unique to the NV225.
