My advice with the TRANS. FAILSAFE PROG message is always to get the codes read using Testbook/T4 (rather than Autologic) to eliminate both the inhibitor switch (P0705 - mentioned on the previous page by John) and the transfer box shift motor potentiometer (P0720/1, etc.) first before concentrating on the transmission itself.

I also have problems with the gearshift, very stiff/clunky in "PRND" mode, and won't locate PARK properly (possible park pin bent?). Could this have any bearing on it?

Left FFRR for 24 hours, then took for a 10 mile test drive - varied driving all speed limits, gentle and hard acceleration, not a squeak - until I stopped to reverse into my drive, then ping and the message Evil or Very Mad Ran it up the road again and got the ping/message a couple more times.

Booked in for diagnostics tomorrow - things must be quiet at LR Harwoods in Basingstoke to get next day service! .

Day 1 at the Stealers Report

"Tech" (word used advisedly Wink) found a seized gear selector connector and a wonky bowden cable on the gear selector. Wants to replace these before investigating further in to the fault message, which kinda makes sense - might fix my stiff gear stick and PARK issue but not sure how it is "linked" to the fault (given I have had gear stick problems for months with no fault). So waiting for parts and outcomes. .

Day 2 at The Stealers

Well, sounds like they fixed the PARK problem and sticky gear shift, and then got the car to fault on a test drive. Here are the fault codes:

0x52ED - CAN
0x52F2 - CAN
0x5223 - Noise Actuator Signal
0x5244 - Shift Error
0x5220 - Sensor Short Curcuit to Ground
0x5221 - Sensor Short Curcuit to Battery

So they say it is the Gear Shift Motor that is knackered and needs replacing. Does it?

Asking £1059 for it. (knew it wouldn't be the cheap option Evil or Very Mad )Possible to shop around for a better price or just cut my losses and get it done? .

If you can manage without your car for a few days you could post the motor to me and I’ll check it for you (FOC, obviously, if you’ll pay for postage) - it’s held onto the transfer box by just three bolts. If it is faulty I’ve had limited success at fixing them, but no promises. It’s very unfortunate that the rotary potentiometers are unavailable separately.

Alternatively you could try Googling ‘IGH500010’ – a number of places have new ones on sale for under £700.

There’s actually a used one on eBay at the moment but they’re asking £400 (or offers) for it and there’s no guarantee that its potentiometer is in perfect condition either.

Thanks for the offer of help.

The car is in with LR main dealer so hoping they will fit part if I supply it.

Having googled found:

http://www.lrdirect.com/IGH500010-Motorasy/ (£530 + VAT - from Britpart)

http://www.lrseries.com/shop/product/listi...-ASSY.html (£574 + VAT)

http://www.trillicklandrovercentre.com/shop/IGH500010/0/0/11533/ (£627 + VAT)

http://www.4x4landroverparts.co.uk/products/motor-assy-1-2-3.html (£726 + VAT)

Can I rely on lrdirect / resellers to offer quality part vs LR? Am also tempted to try it on with LR in the morning.... .

Just speculating, but Land Rover sold around 150,000 L322’s between 2002 and 2006 when the major driveline changes were made and the NV225 transfer box was replaced by the Magna Steyr DD295 unit. The NV225 ‘box was only ever used in the L322 (the X5 used a single-speed version – NV125) and, as far as I’m aware, this shift motor was unique to the NV225.

I wonder therefore, with only 150,000 ish of these motors out there in circulation, whether it would be of any interest to the pattern-part manufacturers to copy this assembly? Maybe all of the IGH500010 shift motors you can buy are manufactured by the OEM, so you can just go for the cheapest? Or is that just wishful thinking?

By the way, how sad is this?

Joe

If you get an issue with LRDirect, if you use them, I could always go round for you, as they are only just down the road from me.

They are part of the local 'LR Specalists' (Their words, defo not mine, having seen what a mess they can do to L322's) K Motors of Leyland.

@ RRPhil

sad indeed Wink

With reference to your speculation, LRDirect offer four alternatives to IGH500010: Britpart, AllMakes, Bearmach and Landrover (priced ascending) with the LR price roughly matching that quoted by my dealer, so it looks like there are remanufacturers of the NV225 transfer box, but these are coming in at @ £350 cheaper. Britpart offer a 24 month guarantee which will beat LR's 12 month warranty, so seems like a risk worth taking, and with nbunney just around the corner with his baseball bat..... Wink

Also thinking of fetching car back from dealer and getting my indie (non LR specialist) to help fit new NV225 (got to be easier than lying on my back on the gravel in my drive, in the rain...) And a goot point raised over on landrovernet: do the fault codes have to be cleared after I fit a new motor (say doing it myself)?

Oh SWMBO was not impressed with all this given I'd just spent @ £800 on the Audi (new cambelt / oil service (synthetic) etc etc) Smile .
