United Kingdom 2004 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 V8 Java Black

hi all, i think you will find its plug and play, the unit is they same visually but now is digital, new or used its will tune to find new station and update them as you go, don't bother changing any aerials as with the power constantly increasing you should get a cracking picture... i too watch top gear while the misses does the shopping, not hared about the dealers doing an upgrade on the tv boxes unless its an exchange box. you cant upgrade the box to digital by software alone, but it will be interesting to find out what they do... V8 facelift Range Rover Autobiography 22" wheels.

Hi Steve, Thanks for the pdf, does make it look quite straightforward. Called dealer today and the unit has arrived, but there's a bit of extra info now. The price is actually @£424 for the digital unit, but if you give LR the old analogue one back, you get £100 off the bill , hence costs £324. (Dealer does not have to remove it, you just have to return the old unit after fitting the new and claim the £100 surchagre back). Seems OK as the analogue is of no use in this country and I don't think I could recover the £100 and shipping costs by trying to sell it online to someone abroad whose analogue unit has failed). Dealer thinks they do need to synchronise the new box so I've told them it should take 30mins to fit and then the time to start the software update and then to check it's updated Ok, not paying for the upload time though. So, it's going in on Friday morning and I'm waiting for the car. I'll get the part #s for you all then and let you know how I got on. Cheers Steve

I think their hourly rate is @£75 (they have already stated a max of 2hrs but I'm aiming for the 1hr fee).
I actually would prefer to fit the unit myself, but no one seems to have the definitive answer as to whether a manual upgrade of software needs to be done once the hardware is in place. If I knew the new unit was just detected and it somehow altered the TV menu presented on the touch screen, I'd do it myself, but as it is, if I fit the unit to find I still need LR to do an update, then I'll end up paying £75 for a 10min job just for the update ,so,I might aswell get them to fit it aswell for hopefully the same money and of course, if it goes wrong, I've got some comeback. Steve

hi, i did post..you don't need it to be coded to the car, it should have the latest software version on it as its new, you will need to set it up and search for new channels but you would do that any way and that's done from the head unit...
you bet your life it will be 2hr labour on that...
its not hard my one took me about 1 1/2 to do, you can check its working while laying in the boot, just take your time and look and take note of all the connectors,i like to take a few photos, you could then post them for others..its not hard...

Thanks Dave, so have you actually fitted the LR digital upgrade yourself already? Its just that any 'freeview' system I've used has totally different menus to the UHF analogue ones and I couldn't see how the touch screen would handle the digital frequency listings (do you end up with 50-60 icons scrolling off the screen display with the channel names on?) unless the software was changed. If you're saing the inforamtion and menu format is generated by the new digital box only, then I'll quite happliy fit it myself. Steve

£75 an hour!!!!!

I feel very hard done by....

My local deal (T H White, Wootton Bassett) charge £104+VAT an hour. What I think is even worse is that they have a different labour rate for different vehicles (Defender is about £70+VAT, Freelander is about £80+VAT & everything else is £104+VAT). Is this normal practice or are they just taking the P Censored Censored S? I mean do you really get a different technician if you take a Defender in or if you take in a brand new 5.0 Supercharged Range Rover? I don't think so...

Hi Dave, Thanks for that, was your mates a touch screen system in his 2006 RR or the older BMW 'X5' one? Steve

Hi Steve, I had the same charging issue with my Lotus Carlton, the Vauxhall dealer charged £70 per hour (this is in 1996!) for the Lotus, but £34 for other Vauxhalls. I challenged it and asked if they worked harder than the other 'fitters' , they told me it was to cover the cost of their specialist Lotus training 4yrs prior. I said as no one was now being trained, I would not cover the garages past costs (their choice to become a Lotus C. dealership) and from then on paid £34/hr like any other Vauxhall. Mind you, they easily made their money on the parts which even with the 20% discount I managed to get out of them, ran into £100s & even £1000s per part!!! Big Cry Steve

I've just had another look through the installation instructions I posted earlier. It looks like I included the incorrect pdf document. It was the same procedure but finished with removing the audio amp. The updated file continues with the tv tuner removal and states at the bottom of the page that the vehicle should be connected to diagnostics to configure the module...

If the link above doesn't work then let me know and I'll repost a new link.

Steve

land rover would say you need to have your car coded after replacing the indicator bulb,if they could get away with it...i have changed several modules and never needed them coded despite what they said..
lcm module
Ulf module
rain/auto light module
when they code a module its usually to put you vin details, registration and/or if needed your mileage for the lcm.

i would go for it my self, what's the worse that could happen, it needs to be coded.. then have it done at least you wont pay for the fitting, V8 facelift Range Rover Autobiography 22" wheels.

I'm with you on this one, I'd much rather give it a go myself on the off chance that it would work. I think my money is better off with me instead of lining the dealer pocket! And like you say, you won't lose anything trying.

I have to admit, one of my original thoughts for having the dealer do it was because for months LR and the dealers said there was no upgrade available, then I find out by chance there now is. I then thought that maybe the parts lad had got mixed up and ordered me the digi unit for a Mdl yr 2007 and so if I fit it myself and it was the wrong part, they might not take it back or charge me the 20% returns fee . Hence, if the garage did it and it was not compatible, then I would pay nothing as they had supplied & fitted the wrong part. However, everything I'm now hearing on the forum backs up the idea that they have decided to do a retro fit unit and so should work. I'm now sorely tempted to just fit it myself and as you say, if it works, great, if not, take it to the dealers to finish the job off with coding etc. Thanks for your help with this Dave/Steve Very Happy Steve
