I don't know about the Varta, but the Bosch S5 has to have the right hand (negative clamp) flange cut off to fit.
I cut my one off before i took it to be fitted, but I was cacking myself as i cut the flange off.
In another life i was an Apprentice Electrician and then Electrical Engineer and i have seen several times what happens when a high current is shorted out.
The Mechanic said, it was tight with the explosive charge device, he only took 30 mins (but charged £45).
It has made a tremendous difference to starting, I have used the FBH since and i may be dreaming, but it also seems to even make the car run even better ?

I bought a new Bosch battery and with a bit of patience and the bonnet in access mode I got it to fit without any modifications. However although it lasts longer than the battery I took out it still goes flat after a couple of days parked ( like this morning Censored ) I am a bit uncertain what to do next as I have in the past left it parked for a couple of weeks, admittedly in warmer weather, and it would start no problem. So I might have wasted the money buying the Bosch as clearly there is an underlying problem. At least I can investigate now as its stopped raining Very Happy Geoff

Thanks all for the advice / encouragement from recent contributors.

I took the plunge this morning and had a go myself. I cut the side flanges off as advised and followed the proceedures detailed elsewhere in this thread.

Job done. A tight fit, but probably took me no more than half an hour.

Now when the cold spellls hit again I can use my FBH with no worries!!

Thanks again folks.

Just ordered another battery using the UKPAS25 code..also ordered from ECP via quidco for a little extra cashback!
However, a bit cheesed off at having to order another battery after about 18 months-2 years...it is becoming a virtually bi-yearly service item.
Anyone know how to claim against the Bosch 5 year warrnaty? - I bought it from Costco so maybe that is the best place to start.
I am really looking forward to the fitting...sound great fun and a good back work out.
Kind regards,
Ed
P.S. why do cars not have a self protection system like my 406 - surely it is not beyond the wit of man for a car to monitor its battery condition and ensure enough is kept in reserve for engine start. Also, thinking of leaving the old battery in the boot for a reserve power source - perhaps with a 6 monthly deep charge routine. '96 Volkswagen Polo 1.4CL - SOLD

my bosch 020 had trouble starting the range so as it was only a year old i took it back to ECP and they replaced it without testing it... ... - .- -.

I don't think I would fare very well at all - but for £100 that's a risk I am prepared to take for the benefit of having a car in which I can use the FBH with impunity without worrying about subsequently starting the engine!

My battery arrived today - Bosch 110 A/H 920CCA - Euro car parts £133 >>>£99 with UKPAS25 code then £4.99 cashback from quidco. Followed the battery disconnection guide allowing plenty of time for car to sleep. Bonnet into access, which was straight forward. 2 year old Bosch 100A/H out (back to costco at earliest opportunity!) and the new 110A/H went in pretty easily with no hacking...wheres the snag?
Trying to reattach the positive, the box of tricks that sits on the side of the battery (I understand TDV8s do not now have pyrotechnics, just a breaker in the circuit, so hazards and telephone still work after a crash) would not slide all the way onto the terminal.
I only solution I could quickly find was to put in some old skirting board first to raise the height of the battery and then secure the battery by another means. All done, put back together and tested satis.
Had a quick kike at the alternator and at idle she is doing 14.3 Volts but with heated front and rear windows, heated seats, AC and Xenons on, this drops to 12.3V...when my wife heads off to school (13 miles then two onto her work) the pre heater has been on, then heated wheel and seat plus Xenons. She sits at 60mph and i wonder whether, despite the distance, it is insufficient to charge her up properly.
Anyhow, the Bosch battery did finally fit without too much trouble. I did consider removing the side insulation that may allow the battery to slide in without the wood. A little step ladder allowed me to climb up onto the suspension mount to aid installation.
Kind regards,

Just to share my experience on the battery for the TDV8. I've searched ebay and Varta 610 402 092 came up as a compatible battery for the car. Ordered it direct from the seller's website (was a little cheaper that way Rolling Eyes ) and got it delivered shortly after. Today set to change out the battery just to find out the Varta is longer by about 40mm. Measured the battery tray and it looked like a snug fit so I gave it a try. It did fit but the positive terminal which is the size of small pack of cigarettes wouldn't go. Lifted one end of the battery, bolted the terminal then lowered it down. It sits fine but no room to either side now. In case I need to remove a positive I will need to lift the battery again. Not the end of the world but a little annoying given that it came from a big reseller and was advertised as a replacement for the OEM battery on a TDV8. Other than that, happy days!

Whilst at the risk of resurrecting an old post just thought I would share my confirmation that with a bit of elbow grease, cursing, brute force and some trimming of the moulding at each end of the battery you can indeed shoe horn the the 393mm long battery into the space available.

I went for the Bosch S5 110ah (£129 delivered from Euro Parts). Thumbs Up

Thanks to those who have posted on the subject previously with guidance as you need all the tips to get her in but everything electrical feels just that bit sharper now with the extra oomph from the bigger battery Smile
