Perm jump start connector

With winter already saying its on its way and already having performed a few jump starts for people and needed one myself after being an idiot im thinking of getting something like this rigged up on the FF

Connectors

Directly to the battery and the outside connector to some good clamps to make jump starting others easier with the weather that's coming.

Has anyone done this and can reccomend a good spot on the front bumper for it?

Also what gauge cable should i be using from the connector to the battery and from as im thinking something like 5-6SWG would be about right?

Not done electrical stuff to this level for years and guessing it would need to cope with upto 90amps @12v so a good thickness Smile

Thinking about this myself.
Two 175A anderson connectors would be fine with 35mm˛ cables.
Was thinking about mounting a connector on the underside of the plastic cill cover just behind the front mudflap.
As well as jump starting they would be useful for battery charging and putting 12V onto the car in the event of battery failure to gain access.
You can also buy a water-proof cover for the connector mounted on the car to keep the dirt out.

After working on the car so much and being in the arches for the front sump guard and wheel swaps i want to avoid that area as even with covers its mucky and slimey as hell Sad

Wondering if there could be a take off point fitted in the rear boot as IIRC a battery has been fitted there so i wonder if the cables in the boot are upto jump starting??

If only DAN was around to help with this Smile FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

The largest cable at the back of the car is 16mm˛ and rated and fused at 100A, it serves the rear fuse board.
It wouldn't be adequate for jump starting.

I've got these on all 3 of our cars (and a boat)

If you run them away from the battery, then they need to be isolated and not left live - so a big relay or manual switch.

I went with the easier option of short leads, so the connector sits on top of the battery.

I went with 54mm cable and 4.5m leads - I have a set in each car. I put a second connector on the other end of the leads, about 18" from the clips so that if I'm jumping one of my own cars its connector to connector and I can even connect the leads together for a 9m run - useful for the boat !

I bought these leads, chopped the clamps off one end and soldered my connectors. I bought an extra set to do the battery connections to keep the leads longer.

Will take some photos Very Happy

was reading LRO the other day and saw these connectors, was having similar thoughts but placement is testing me.Behind the front grille seems about the easiest place or if you wanted to go to the trouble or long cables to the rear hitch and towing electrics could be more subtle, but the routing is an issue, still drinking lots of tea thinking bout it... Im thinking RAC/AA style and on the front bumper, the middle lip below the number plate.

The whole idea is that it saves me opening the bonnet and gives me an alternate way in if the battery is toasted. FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

sounds like a plan.I want them for ease of charging, saves having to pop the bonnet when i stick the ctek on in the garage, more for convenience than anything but will come in handy as jumping points as well.will drink more tea and have a longer look at the bumper today

Don't drive or knock into anything, or hope someone doesn't reverse into the front of your car while in the supermarket.

You can't beat a big live exposed knob Mr. Green

And mind out if you go off road.

I go off road quite a bit but it would be covered and it would have to be a decent smash to split the connector so much that the two small pieces of exposed metal touched each other. A large inline fuse would probably do, say 100amp? Cheap enough to fit Smile FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

Could you do anything with the grill? Make a flap of some sort? [img]http://www.fuelly.com/driver/rob2529/range-rover[img/]
