That would be a £1600 a year saving for a TDV8.

For my TD6 it saves £1329 a year. a sizeable amount of money, though per tank i save £53

OK this is my last post on the thread as we are obviously never going to get full agreement due to different driving styles and very valid opinions.

However:

1. Vogue - My figures are based on the two exact cars described that I have been using for over a month on varied driving but including quite a lot of long distance motorway work. They are not invented figures but would not be achievable if either had a heavier bias towards urban.

2. My figures include a £4000 difference in purchase price but the CAP difference is £6000 for 2006/56 Vogue SE AJV8 and TDV8.

For those that get different MPG from their TDV8's or AJV8's (Not the SC or BMW 4.4) then the following applies if the actual £6k CAP margin is used in the calcs:

A) 5 MPG MARGIN (20 v 25 as in my case)

6000/480 = 12.5 years before Diesel is better deal

B) 7.5 MPG MARGIN (18 V 25.5)

6000/990 = 6 years before Diesel is better deal

C) 10 MPG MARGIN (18 V 28 as in Vogues case)

6000/1262 = 4.75 years before Diesel is better deal

And here I rest my case........

yes, I see exactly where you are coming from.

But maybe I have missed something, your figures don't allow for the significantly better retained value of the TDV8 when you come to sell, if I am correct then those may not be realistic figures

Vogue, that's not the case. In fact quite the opposite.

You already have had the benefit of a £6k discount over the identical Diesel car and as the car ages the price differential will reduce making the Petrol a better car in respect of further depreciation as it has already had the big hit compared with the Diesel.

If these cars where kept for three years:

PETROL VOGUE SE AJV8:

Purchase price £18000 value in three years £10100 (CAP 80,000mls) = £8000 depreciation (2666pa)


DIESEL VOGUE SE TDV8:

Purchase price £24000 value in three years £15500 (CAP 80,000mls) = £8500 depreciation (2833pa)

Gaz you have raised a very intersting point for me as i had assumed i need a diesel because i do 12-15k per annum and dont like the thought of mega monthly fuel bills, but if the prices are so different then i would much prefer petrol.
Can i briefly ask you how you would rate the 4.4 bmw engine for the economy, what in your experience do you think would be the differences for the bmw 4.4 and the td6?

Bigger curve ball what about LPG? Even towing from Brighton to Scotland and back I got over 22mpg on the computer so prob doing the equivalent of 35mpg in money, there are plenty on sale on the bay and even a few SC ones. will make you laugh but my Suzuki Hayabusa cost almost the same to run to work as the RR BUT it does do 200mph even taking it easy theres not a lot between the 2. One day your life will flash before your eyes......................................make sure yours is worth watching!

Then theres the extra time spent at filling stations.....

say average fill up of 18 gallons takes 15 mins,

in TDV8 25 MPG equates to 450 miles per tank, or 22 fill ups
in AJV8 20mpg equates to 360 miles per tank or 28 fill ups

or 1.5 hour of my life per year, extra in a filling station, as a jet setting business man on an astronomical salary( ) that would equate to £1.9m over a 4 year period........ ......no sorry decimal place in the wrong position .....£19.00.

at the end of the day its horses for courses. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜
