Well just to thrown in a wee curve ball, I find the huge torque of the TDV8 suits the FF (or maybe just my style of driving now) much better than the SC, but then maybe I'm just trying to convince myself I made the right decision to jump to the dark stuff! Thumbs Up

I don't think anyone using an SC to its full potential would get anywhere near 20mpg, so if you do the sums @15mpg, with the odd foray down to single figures for "spirited" driving, and in town, you'd be looking at around £4,800............ Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue

I've compared my spend on fuel since selling the 5.0 ... I have spent pretty much 50% LESS on fuel over the last 14,000 miles, so er ...

Petrol ... 300 miles max to a tank.
Diesel ... smaller tank (96l) ... 420-560 miles per tank.

That's prettty close to what I'm seeing.

I would get 270-300 in the SC and over 400 for a full (smaller) tank Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue
Had- 2008 TDV8 Vogue SE in Java black
Had - 2007 S/C in Stornoway Grey

Hang on a Jolly Old Mo you SC boys I am comparing a Naturally Aspirated 4.4 AJV8 Petrol with the TDV8. Its quite a frugal engine for Petrol V8.

If you go for the 4.2 Supercharged car, or the 5.0 Supercharged! the maths are obviously different.

My calculations are based on actual MPG achieved over a month of similar driving as I run both cars......

Read the whole thread ..... Very Happy

PS: If you drove the TDV8 in a "spirited" (SC single figure) manner you would not get 25 mpg either.....

Yes of course:

RESALE VALUE: I am comparing used 2006(56) cars with a price differential of at least 4000 at purchase. This differential will in fact lessen as the car gets older making resale value a positive or at least neutral factor going forward. You pay less and sell for less but the margin may get smaller.

SERVICE: The annual service cost difference between a naturally aspirated AJV8 and a TDV8 is minor and is unlikely to effect the calculation in any relevant way.

** Note - this only applies to well used models when the AJV8 was still being made.

First of all the facelift AJV8 is considerably more frugal than the 4.4 BMW unit.

Second I drive like most experienced drivers around the speed limit on urban roads and at 80-85mph on Motorways.

In the period of note I have driven to Manchester and to Paris (At 90 mph most of the way) taken the kids to school and been to see many cars within a 70 mile radius. I understand how to get the performance from a car without a lead boot. The calculation after 1800 miles is 21.9mpg and the car say 22.4mpg.

Unless you have sensibly used an AJV8 over a long period you will just have to believe me I have no reason to lie Smile

This thread is very specifically about the AJV8 4.4 Petrol Vs the TDV8 3.6 of similar age. Its a forgotten car and a real bargain to boot and I wanted others to know why I thought this. No point in comparing other cars as this is a direct comparison between two specific car options around the facelift 2006/7 model years. Thumbs Up

Totally agree with Gaz on this one, the 4.4 AJV8 is far and away a better choice than the 3.6 TDV8 if you do less then 10k miles per annum.

I was running 16mpg in only town driving and 20-22mpg on the open road. OBC showed 18 mpg over 18 months and just over 10k miles and was a good 7-8k cheaper than the equivalent diesel. Te car had performance when needed and almost total silence and smoothness when motorway cruising and no forced induction issues to worry about as the s/c and tdv8 do. You can rev the nuts off it or treat it with a feather for a foot and its enjoyable either way.

Give it a couple of years and it will be the engine of choice for weekend/second car owners.

Gaz, I totally agree with you.

Do the numbers with actual MPG figures and you'll find out it makes a lot of sense. In Holland it is even more interesting with the road tax rules (diesel is/was twice the petrol tax and LPD 2.5 times petrol, based on the weight of the car, with a few exceptions and I used those exceptions Smile).

As for the fuel consumption, my S/C with only slow city driving and warm temperatures (30 to 40 C) still does 11 to 12 MPG so not that bad I would say. I don't think a NA AJV8 would do 20 MPG nor would a TDV8 do 22 MPG but that is beside the point. Compare apples with apples as Gax proposed from the beginning and then do the numbers.

One of the reasons I would choose a TDV8 is because I still want to my trip through Africa and than range becomes more important than anything else Smile MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
Have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme to be tinkering with the settings etc. !!

I did the same calcs a few years back when I bought my 2004 4.4 Vogue ...equivalent 3.0d at the time with same miles on were quite a few grand more

petrol all the way Smile

its the same with lots of cars, petrol has been catching up of late and the price premium on diesel cars, and their fuel, often means you need to be a real high mileage driver to see a true benefit cheers

Well I'm on my second ajv8 engined Rangie and I think they are a great buy.
I get 15-16 about the doors 21-24 on the motorway. Overall about 18mpg
Not many people understand how good it is compaired to the BMW 4.4 or the td6.
I was trying to sell mine on here for £12k and no takers. Rolling Eyes It was a bargain. Anyway I'll keep it now as the snow is here

Ive had the AJV8 4.4 for a couple of years now and couldn't agree more with Gaz.

They run absolutely silently until you push them harder and then they sound really nice! I don't do many miles a year, so can't justify adding 8-10k on top of my car to get something that does 5-8 mpg more.

I get 18mpg pootling about and anything between 22-25mpg on a run depending on the speed. Car shows an average of 22.?mpg.

Having owned the TD6, I'd never ever go back to one. They're not bad at all, the car was meant for this engine IMHO.
