RR 2003 Vogue V8 - Transmission fault on warm up

Hi All

Still battling with the dealer on this one. They fixed a lot of issues, but one remains and now they have gone cold which leaves me with a horrid decision: Do i ask for a refund or try to fix this fault under the 3rd party warranty?

The issue is this:
When cold, start up and drive. Literally within the first 10 mins, there is almost a guaranteed moment when the transmission throws a spaz attack. The symptom is like a clutch slipping and then all of a sudden it clonks into gear. It does it usually between 0 - 15mph in 1st gear pulling out from a junction. At times, a random "transmission sensor overheat" alarm is raised during this warm up time also, but i think they are unrelated.

After the car is run to warm, it is faultless, issue only manifests when cold.

My concern is, is it something likely to be really expensive £1000+ to put right or could it be an adjustment issue? I dont want to fork out for a new transmission which would be way more than the warranty would cover.

It recently had its sump gasket changed to stop a leak and presumably new oil fitted, since then, the slip issue has appeared. The sensor issue has persisted since i bought the car - again, only on warm up.

No permanent alarms on the dash, so obviously it corrects itself Big Cry

Ideas?

Rob

Was it the gearbox sump gasket that was changed?

Just a thought - is the v8 gearbox oil fill procedure the same as the td6 one in that the final oil fill needs to be done whilst the engine is running to ensure the pump / torque converter are full. If so maybe low oil ??? But thats only a guess.

Assuming it was the gearbox sump gasket, was it the dealer who replaced this or an independent?

It has to be significant that the slipping problem only started after this work was done. Do you know that they’ve put the right fluid (Mobil ATF LT71141) in the transmission? (presumably a dealer would have got this right). Your symptoms could indicate that the fluid level is low i.e. the pump empties the sump & begins to suck air when the fluid is cold (causing a clutch to slip) but once warm it can return to the sump fast enough to prevent this.

The temperature warning could possibly be a faulty sensor in the transmission wiring harness – not uncommon.

Excellent feedback! Thanks guys.
Yes, it was the transmission sump that was changed

An independent did the work (and i don't know who), so it sounds like the symptoms could be caused by the low oil if they didn't put enough in. It never had this issue before, and now it does, so sounds like a reasonable conclusion.

How can i check to see if the level is correct?

Will look into the sensor issue for sure, thanks!

You need to make sure that they put this stuff, and only this stuff, in your transmission :

otherwise your torque converter lock-up clutch’s days are numbered. The fluid should be honey-coloured. If it’s red, your troubles may be just beginning Crying or Very sad

Also, ensure that they didn’t make the classic mistake of not having the engine ticking over while the final fluid level was set

Great feedback. Thanks!

I have it booked in at my garage on Tues. I don't trust this car dealer at all.
They said they'll let the temp of the oil cool before checking too

quick question - i notice the oil is much cheaper online, i may buy a load ahead of Tuesday.
How many litres does the transmission need?

Also, does anyone know the part number and price of the wiring harness?

10 litres from dry, but only half that for a 'drain then refill'

Thanks Phil
For now, i will assume (and hope) they used the correct oil, but didnt use enough. I found on ebay a site selling the Mobil oil for about £10.99 a litre, i bought a couple litres.

Quick update.
My local garage managed to squeeze in another 1.5 litres of oil into the transmission today. I am keeping my fingers crossed that this cures the 1st gear slip issue when cold.

Will revisit the oil temp sensor issue another day when i can afford it.

the dealer where i bought the RR was using a garage of their own. It seems they were cutting corners.
The garage i use, i trust completely. FFRR 2003 Vogue V8
