De-cat Td6 ?

Has anyone de-cat'ed their Td6 ?

I am thinking about it, for no ther reason than I hate all the emission stuff strangling the engine.

I have a K & N and have removed the egr, so thought it might work.

Mines a 2003, so assume I'd not have any dashboard lights or errors thrown up ? Is it EU3 ?

Perhaps I'm just looking for more things to do !!

No it's not.
The requirement in the mot for a cat is only applicable to spark ignition engines ie petrol, lpg etc.
You don't need a cat for an mot on a diesel engined car even if it had one at manufacture.
The mot test for a diesel is as before, a smoke test only. emissions doesn't come into it.
You can take the cat off if you like but the exhaust smells a bit "fumey" if you do.

I have had my 2003 TD6 de-catted and I have removed the EGR.
Had a look down the inside of the CAT once removed and could not see much light out the other end so it might have been a bit blocked. Nothing to bring up error codes as no sensors on the exhaust pipe.
Only real downside is it does stink but hey its a diesel and there is nothing else on mine to say its a diesel. The engine is a bit more audible which I like.

I've removed the EGR valve, fitted a K&N and replaced the CAT with a decat section of pipe.
I did the EGR first, and it kicked out a lot less smoke on acceleration and seemed to run smoother.
I did the decat next, and it accelerated better, and sounded nicer.
Both of these mods appeared to give a slight improvement to economy.
The last thing I did was to fit a K&N. Together with the other changes, this made the car pleasingly more lively (for a TD6). I like the increase in induction noise from under the bonnet, but it may not be to everyone's taste. Economy is good (approx 25mpg) but these changes have improved the driveability of the car, rather than made it more economical, which is fine by me.
No dashboard errors have come up so all is well. Thumbs Up
Tickover when cold does create a bit of diesel fuming though, but as nicedayforit said, the car won't fail an MOT because the CAT has been removed. I've got the option of refitting mine if I have a change of heart, and want it to smell sweeter, but I'm happy at the moment, as it's not really that noticeable.

Thanks gents,

Looks like it could be a reasonable mod for around the £100 mark.....

My Td5 never had a CAT, so didn't worry about it.

I have got used to the extra induction noise from the K & N, but was a little surprised when I first heard it.

I like my car to be quiet when I'm pottering about, and nice and smooth when pressing on, so you could argue I've got the wrong engine !!

A mate of mine had a 4.4 Vogue with a Khan quad pipe exhaust, and it sounded like a Nascar.......

I do wonder whether all of this is leading to me getting it remapped..........as I seem to be eeking out a little bit more driveability here..........and there.........

One thing I forgot to mention was cleaning the inlet manifold. My TD6 smoked like the winner of a smoking contest on national smoking day. When I replaced the EGR I saw what looked like a 5mm build up of carbon in the inlet to the inlet manifold. I took the manifold off and ran it through a cleaner bath, washed it out with petrol and finally hot soapy water. As well as making one hell of a mess I had a spotless manifold which combined with an EGR blanking meant no more smoke.

So is there a howto on a De-Cat for a TD6?

Is it simply a case of exhaust off, cat off, replace with suitable "decat" pipe, exhaust back on?

And apart from the "smell" is it worth it? .

That's all there is to it Joe, I've done it to several diesel vehicles and not noticed any difference. Not worth the effort IMO unless you have a sick Cat

Was talking to a friendly MOT mechanic the other day. The rules are that a diesel car doesn't have to have a Cat fitted, but if one was fitted as original then it needs one for an MOT pass. He did say that most people don't know if one was fitted as standard on any particular vehicle and most mechs probably won't check anyway. Smile No longer FF owner but still interested. Present car Jaguar XE

As 47P2 says not much noticeable difference apart from more noise in the cabin which I like, weird I know.
But with all the soot mine was pumping out I thought it a good idea. I do not know much about how they work on a diesel but it 'looked' very restricted to me when peering down the inside.
