Viscous fan failure

Is it possible for a viscous fan to fail into an always on position as it sounds like mine has as the whoosh sound increases with revs and doesn't sound boost related to me???

Help me please!! FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's
Mantec Sump Guard, Rigid Load liner, MY10 BT upgrade.

Indeed thats exactly how they fail normally... Rarely will they stop working at all, 99 out of 100 times they stick on...

Viscous fans fail due to the pin that actuates the internal slide valve stickes due to corrosion.
You can remedy this by taking the fan off the car and looking at the bi-metal spring on the front centre.
The spring acts as a heat sensor and when it gets hot it lenghtens and coils up.
It's connected to the centre pin which rotates to close the valve so allowing the viscous fan to lock up.
Normally what you do is disconnect the outer end of the spring from the body of the fan and then apply a lot of WD40 to the pin where it passes into the body of the fan and then grip the pin with pliers or grips and start moving the pin back and forth til it frees off.
Never had to do it on a TD6 but done it a number of times to other cars.
Worth a try, cheaper than a new fan Very Happy
To stop it happening in the first place it's worth lubricating the pin every now and again.

I've removed mine, it's been off a month or so and did a 1000 mile two day trip to Edinburgh and back no problem.
(Not towing BTW)
Needle stays a rock steady middle of the gauge.

New Zealand 2010 Range Rover Autobiography 5.0 SC V8 Galway Green

My brother in law had an issue with his Rover SD years ago, where the viscous coupling failed more spectacularly, it came of the shaft and hit a hole in the radiator. He didn't realize it and the engine overheated in the south of France. He had the car recovered and we replaced the radiator and coupling and the car was fine (no bent cylinder head !!).

Just check that that is not happening on your car. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
Have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme to be tinkering with the settings etc. !!

Ive often thought about removing mine as it drives me mad (noise) but im unsure weather the electric fan comes in when it gets very hot (like on a disco 2) anyone know?

Well If I've read RAVE correct, the electric fan does come on if engine gets to hot.

Also, I now get to hear a straight 6 rumble and not a vicous fan when I'm driving, try it, most of the time I don't listen to radio anymore, just listen to the 6 cylinder beat! Very Happy

Don't know if my RAVE covers SC...

The TD6 has a huge viscous fan and an equally sized electric fan, recently due to my main engine thermostat being bypassed my engine was over cooling, it struggled to reach the top of the blue segment on the gauge. This tells me that the TD6 runs very cold, so all this aditional cooling is probably only needed if in the Sahara, in deep sand, towing a trailer!
So I now leave my engine cooling to just the electric fan (which as far as I know, has never come on) and in all conditions, even sat in traffic has not budged above mid point on gauge, and their may even be a MPG improvement.
