Sticking rear brake

Just wanting a bit of advice.

Had new brakes, disks and pipes put on 9 months ago. Rear left break is definitely sticking as disk is very hot compared to others.

Without even looking, local garage says it will need new disks and probably caliper as it will have warped the disk. really?

is it nt just a case of wheel off, free slider or pins and re-assemble?

How can they say that without looking? Sounds like BS to me, try another garage!
If the disc is discoloured, it may well be warped.
Disc run-out and thickness needs to be checked, a piston may be seized. If you can’t deal with that confidently yourself, go to a reputable garage.
Brake discs are consumable items, just like brake pads, and need to be renewed when worn, typically every few years, depending on mileage. If parts need replacing, you will have to do both sides to be safe, never do just one side. :thumbsup:

I have had exactly the same problem, after a rear caliper piston seized, the disc was still in perfect condition, the disc should be checked first, NOT automatically replaced.
Plus - depending upon the carrier / caliper condition, it is also possible to overhaul these parts especially if they are relatively new.

Agree with Merchy, highly unlikely to need much if all parts only 9months old, unless mileage is taxi-like! If DIY, clean thoroughly before you begin, don’t push back a dirty piston into the seal or you may get a leak, use loads of brake cleaner.
I clean, partly strip, & re-lube all my brakes each Summer on a sunny day, -much better than having to do it when it’s freezing cold and you’re running out of daylight.

- maybe take it up with the garage that fitted them as they should be under a 12month warranty if the parts are faulty. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

You can buy callipers for around £20 for the L322 so I'd just swap out for a new calliper and go. I had this happen regularly on my old L322.

If you have an OEM calliper on the vehicle now, that is sticking, then it'd be worthwhile refurbing that with a fresh seal kit ready to put back on when the next seizure occurs. If it is a cheap aftermarket calliper then just a quick change out and throw away is best.

I got quite good at swapping out rear callipers on the L322, it'd take well under 30 minutes even when using the car jack.

UPDATE

So the garage told me the piston is not retracting fully and caliper needs to be replaced. That also recommended replacing both sides calipers and at the same time. Disks are ok apparently.

Projected total cost was £570!! Shocked

Thanks for the info. Where do you get calipers for £20 from? These are the large 6 pot Brembo ones, original Calipers I think, as the whole brake system was refurbed in sept last year (pipes, disks and pads) only 6000 miles ago.

They are listed on the likes of Island and other LR parts places at around £45. From memory the OEM part is over £200, but it is a much better unit.

Callipers either work or they don't so replacing both is BS. Usually the NS one is the one to go as that gets more road grime thrown its way.

These are not for the 4.4 TDV8. They are for the 3.6 TDV8.
