SDV8 Motorway Vibrations/Unbalanced Wheel Sensation 70+ MPH

Hi All,

New to the forum, this is my first post!

I took ownership of a 2017 Facelift L405 in October 2022, absolutely love the car, but its always suffered from an annoying vibration/unbalanced wheel symptom on motorways, first of all I got all the wheels checked out and fitted 4x new continental tyres, the wheels aren't buckled (22" turbine)

I even had it to another tyre centre today, who have some super duper balance/diagnostic machine (1 of 3 in the entire country)

The car has full LR history, all diff/transfer/gear box fluids all changed.

Driving around B roads its absolutely fine, its just on motorways at cruising speeds.

I work in the motor trade, and you would swear it was just unbalanced wheels, but its clearly not.

I took it to a local specialist, they said they can feel it! But are stumped as to what it could be - they checked the rear diff fluid and said it looked fresh (replaced back end of 2022)

Any help would be amazing!!

Check brake temperature after the concern has occurred, also check dampers for leakage, you might have to take them off to do comparative tests. It's not unusual for a damper to suffer from harmonic oscillation at speed with no perceived issues on slower or rougher roads, if you have access to chassis ears, put them on the top mounts of each damper. - can you feel it through the steering or just the body?

Hi,

It’s mainly the body / the specialist I took it to did hypothesis it could be suspension related, but they didn’t know how to pin point it Sad

If they don't have 'chassis ears' or know that they are the first line of diagnosis for that sort of concern, I'd suggest somewhere else - doesn't have to be a LR 'specialist', just someone that is more interested and capable.

I agree with the check you road wheel temperatures. I had a similar experience with my old L322 RR that would get the vibes above 50mph. The N/S rear road wheel was hot and the calliper seized.

Hi, it looks like I have a rear damper that's knackered causing the wheel to bounce after it goes over bumps and that makes the whole car feel like there is a vibration from that corner.

I had noticed there was a vagueness from the back of the car but I've never owned a RR before so never joined the dots.

Yes the local RR garage took it for a drive and the mechanic took a video of the rear wheels as the drove, could see it quite clearly from about 40mph and faster

Is yours a V8? I am lead to believe the V8 has a different damper setup..........

I swapped all 4 wheels, and symptoms still remain.

I am going to take it to Land Rover in Hull, from my experience I suspect its the transfer box...............

Well a quick update from mine.

Changed the damper and done the rear brakes at the same time.

The vagueness is gone but the vibration is still there so getting the wheels checked again for roundness tomorrow morning and if that doesn't solve it I'm hoping the full gearbox and transfer case flush will help
