Can’t start & Gearbox fault after jacking

Hi All, I’d appreciate some advice as I’ve gotten myself into a right pickle;

TDV8 4.4 with rotary gear selector.
The car is in low ratio.
The car is in Park.

Here’s the background: been working on the car with both rear wheels jacked & propped on axel stands to adjust the EPB. During this procedure I rotated the wheels to check for resistance as per the procedure. All fine and adjustments completed okay. The car was left on the axel stands overnight.

Finished off today & lowered the car off the stands. During the lower the vechicle “moved” when on one side was axel stand and the other on the refitted rear wheel.. It was quite a jolt but the trolley Jack was under and mitigated the movement so that the vehicle didn’t fall. I jacked it back up and continued to remove the remaining axel stand and refit the remaining wheel.

Went to start it to pull it forward but I won’t turn over the starter clicks but then there are gearbox warning alerts on the dash. ( The gear selector doesn’t raise up but I can’t remember if it does that before or after the engine starts ).

Went to try and re-jack it but noticed that because the handbrake has been off the Jack has been pulling the car backwards so the now it’s with millimetres of fouling the corner of the garage wall.

I’m stuck !
I can’t Jack the car to get both wheels back off the ground and try and rotate them.
I can rock the car by hand whilst on the ground but only slightly & it’s made no difference.
I can’t pull it forward with another vehicle as it’s in Park.

Any creative suggestions or advice appreciated!

All I can think of is taking a risk and trying to pull it forward with the wife’s car. I’m considering this a last resort. TDV8 4.4 2012

Sounds like the battery is flat. Can you jump start it in it’s current position? 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

Hi JayGee, the battery seems good. Everything powers up and works. It’s only a few months old.

P.S…… I’ve put it on charge just in case ( Always do the simplest thing first ). TDV8 4.4 2012

Even a new battery will drain quickly if you have left the ignition on for a while and a clicking starter and gearbox fault lights are a classic sign. Can you get a voltage from a multimeter or the ‘753’ menu. BTW the selector only rises when the engine turns over. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

I’ve put it on charge and it does seem to be drawing strongly through the charger; I had left the rear doors open for some hours yesterday whilst refitting various bits of trim so, fingers crossed, the puddle/ interior lights may have drawn down the battery. Here’s hoping! TDV8 4.4 2012

Yes also sounds like a low battery to me.

I think the errors and gearbox fault are a red herring, as a result of a low battery.

However... if you don't know if it's had the alternator done (or know it hasn't), once you've got it started, I'd check the alternator is working properly. 2015 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 SDV8

Faulty alternator would throw other faults as the charging system is pretty smart at monitoring itself If it fails it fails with little warning from what I’ve researched. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

I go with low battery too. Leave it a good 24hrs
If you need to move it then wheel dolly might be an option...

DONT jump start it if you can possibly avoid it sir...

Just look at the trouble codes you have now "hopefully" just down to an undercharged or discharged battery... Good advice above about battery resert sir Thumbs Up

Why should ‘Sir’ not try jump starting his vehicle as long as ‘Sir’ follows the correct procedure? 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

Because it is not recommended to jump start any modern Range Rover SIR! They quite enjoy munching ECU’s so, it’s highly recommend to charge not jump the batteries… Sir

The 2010-12 owners manual has detailed instructions to start from another car or booster pack. If there was a potential danger in this it would state recovery to a manufacturer approved workshop was the the required procedure. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

Written by the same people who say the transmission fluid lasts the life of the car....

This is a good example of experience teaching us that there are better ways to do things... Thumbs Up Pete

By what physical / electrical process does jump or battery boost starting damage the ECU if done correctly? If there was an issue and owners were frying ECU’s on a regular basis (flat batteries are hardly uncommon on these vehicles) I’d expect it would be a common topic on the forums? 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)
