Splutter, jerk, judder restricted performance mystery SOLVED

Hi team,

Bit of an odd one last night....

Ran some errands locally, came out of a shop, started up and pulled away and down the road a little bit I get a jerk through the drivetrain. Then more jerks. I'm doing 15 mph. Maybe it's like the throttle is cutting out. As I accelerate, revs are jumping up and down and as this cyclical jerking is getting worse.

As is got worse it trips into Restricted Performance. Which actually made everything ok. Once the red light came on, everything was ok. I was able to smoothly accelerate, gear changes went up and down ok. Manual gear changes all fine too.

I'm thinking this is very odd but the car will tell me what's wrong. So fired up the IID and:
No faults. WTH?
Ok a couple of typical nothing codes like general electrical failure audio amplifier, that sort of thing. hit 'clear'. Cleaning those residual codes and also removing the Restricted Performance.

So I pull away again and same jerking starts within 150 metres. Tripped into Restricted again. And then in Restricted it was once again smooth and silky acceleration, up - and down changes all fine. Like normal driving.

I thought maybe gearbox so I reset the adaption values. Only a couple of clicks why not. Didn't fix it.

Here's a bit of a detailed symtoms description:
After removing Restricted Performance
Idling fine as standstill.
Pull away gently, low steady throttle input
Revs climb to say 1900 rpm
Gearbox changes up, revs drop say 1200rpm
Upon the rev drop, whilst you can feel the gear change is smooth,
as the revs try to climb again it momentarily cuts then jerks increasingly to a judder.
Increasing throttle makes it worse.

My thoughts:
It could be gearbox but that is changing beautifully smoothly when in Restricted.
Or something to do with throttle?

What I find really odd is no errors on the IID despite Restricted Performance.
- I don't get how the IID can't see the source of the Restricted Performance. Surely that must leave a digital trail. Or should I be looking somewhere the than 'faults'.

Last few days: Changed the oil Sunday. Went to Kent on Tuesday, nice run at 70(it) mph, ran beautifully. Did check oil level multiple times since oil change including yesterday afternoon a few hours before this happened. Stuck head underneath last night too, no fluids haemorrhaging.

So I've left it overnight. Maybe I'll be lucky and a long switch off / rest / reset might clear itself. He says hopefully.

. Cheers, Greg

My first thoughts would be fuel starvation for some reason ?.
Have you seen all the posts relating to faulty connectors on pump in tank ?
Good luck.

Hi Greg , just on the IID tool ( which i think are great ) i had a similer issue with my 405 but i think my issue is specific to the 405 BUT the IID didn't record an error code for the first 10 times ( appox) it did it but then did record a code which helped me trace the issue. Sorry i can't help with the specific issue you have. 2015 4.4 AB

Thanks Mike. Fuel - interesting and a good line of enquiry, thank you!

John - what was your error code and issue?

This was it Greg , very similar symptoms to yours , was fixed by a replacement fuel pressure sensor loom part. 2015 4.4 AB

Thanks John! And Mike this is certainly in line with your first thought re fuel.

I'll check it out, yes you are right the TSB is for your 405 but we do have the same engine more or less so I'll check over the manual and engine bay. I'll look to see if I have that set up on the 322.

Symptoms are very very similar so gives me a definite area to investigate. Thumbs Up

No problem Greg ,very annoying when you don't have a fault code to work from. I was amazed my iid tool didnt show a fault code as the hesitation, etc was very pronounced. Good luck with the fault finding Thumbs Up 2015 4.4 AB

Thanks Stan too, good idea.

What I don't get, and this may be a more general question, what actually does Restricted Performance do?

For example does the fuel pump pressure decrease?

Or does it just limit factors like speed.

I think the 'restricted' parameters are broader though - e.g. I notice a slight over-run just for a blip when I switch off the engine (if in Restricted Performance mode)

. Cheers, Greg

Good question Greg, I don’t know the answer, but have been reading through WM this AM and this is only reference to engine judder that I can find.

All fuel related.

thanks Mike! Haven't had time to browse the manual yet.
Yes all pointing at fuel system.

Reason I'm wondering about Restricted Performance parameters is because it runs better/nicely/normal under restricted.

John - did yours run any differently when Restricted kicked in?

.
