Odd one - go to start but it clunks (starter engages but won’t turn over). No error messages on the dash aside from the low range light flashing. Tried a new battery to no avail. I’ll copy/paste the codes later to see if that helps.

I’d did this once last week but then started and drove twice since. Any thoughts chaps? Tried resetting the error message but no joy.

Sounds like the starter motor… seems to be something of a known issue.

Mine does it sometimes. Another press of the start button and all is good.

There are a few threads on it.

Contacts tend to get carboned up inside the starter.

Some have stripped them down and cleaned them up… some have just fitted a new starter.

Ah, probably not that either then….

I read sometimes the joins in the cabling can be an issue, but I’m not an expert.

Could be cable joins.

I would suspect a bad connection.

I had the same after disconnecting the battery to change the alternator.

The battery terminals appeared to be tight but as a last resort before buying a new battery I re-tightened them tighter than I would normally think necessary and have had no problem since. It did not make sense to me as they were already tight but it worked.

The fault codes are probably nothing to worry about. The voltage spike when you are trying to start will be causing all the ECU's to get confused.

Have a look at all the high current battery and earth connections to see if they are tight and not corroded.

On a RRS I had to use my diagnostic tool to tell the car it had a new battery and pair it up as that was throwing all sorts of faults. Once I done that everything was fine

Have you tried just clearing the codes and giving it a go?

I notice there's a message regarding the alternator there, has it ever been replaced?

When the starter motors on our car packed in we'd get a feint clunk from the starter. It wouldn't make the loud clunk as it tried to engage that you're getting.

Our dash didn't go out and come back on either.

Try running a jump lead from the engine to the negative terminal battery as if you've got a bad earth that should in theory bypass it.

Have you tried turning the engine over by hand? Might be worth trying to get a socket on the crank pulley from underneath and seeing if it'll spin.

Did this happen just after you'd switched it off?

@Benrk - I’ll do this reset later and see if it clears. Yep new alternator a couple years ago. Voltage up to over 14v when running

@dhallworth - When it happens again I’ll try this. Oddly started fine twice last last night so I don’t think it’s anything mechanical (thank god)

However - more good news - just discovered the coolant is low and there is a slight creaminess under the oil fill cap. The header tank is also under compression after running for a couple minutes. Is that normal? I dare not drive it now despite it starting

That sounds like an oil-water emulsion which needs looking into more closely before running it for any length of time.
Post some pictures.

Usually gaskets but best practice is to replace the cooler too as they can warp. My old one was and so new gaskets alone would not have fixed it. Usually shows as oil in the coolant. Emulsion in oil cap is sometimes a sign of head gasket.
