Turbo Failure 3.6 TDV8

Ok so since having the car (2009 3.6 TDV8) I’ve been changing the oil every 5,000, letting it cool for 30s before shutdown and generally trying to be nice to my dream car. I’ve removed EGR’s and had the BAS egr delete and maps applied. It’s now on 150,000, the gearbox was replaced at 110,000. One of the turbos had be done previously.

Driving today pulling out of a garage today I applied a fair amount of power and heard a clunk (which I thought at the time was the gearbox) then lost all power and had white/grey smoke spewing from the back end.
I pulled over and shut down. I tried to restart and it was lumpy as hell. Got recovered, read codes, nothing. No EML light, grey smoke from both sides, very lumpy idle.

Thoughts? Would you expect to see smoke from both sides of it was just one turbo? It’s sat at the garage awaiting someone to look at it but I’m trying to get a bit of a head start. Anything I can read on the IID tool to help diagnose?

When turbos fail it's usually white smoke from burnt oil, not sure but I expect you have a cross over in the exhaust so you will get smoke out of both pipes...

Sorry for your loss, fingers crossed it's just a pipe or similar... Pete

That would make sense. Fingers crossed 🤞. They can’t look at it till Tuesday, I love this car and really hope it isn’t completely shagged!

When one turbo fails the loss of oil pressure due to the oil flow past the failed turbo seal can cause the ‘good’ turbo to also fail (according to my local indy (Keith Gott, Alton) - learned that when my TDV8 died, due to turbo failure. Plus the possibility of the engine hydro-locking on its oil into the induction system. So fingers crossed for yours, but be prepared for a range of outcomes.

Oh good, another turbo, that would be just my luck.

Is the 4.4 engine any more reliable or would I be opening the same can of worms?

The 4.4 TDV8 runs 'sequential' turbos where the second turbo doesn't come out to play until 2500-2700rpm are reached. In everyday driving it'll be unusual to use the second turbo. When I first had mine, I gave her a little 'welly' one day up to near 3000rpm & got the dreaded 'Restricted Performance'....cut a long story short, second turbo acutator was oil/gummed up through lack of use, all cleaned & running sweet. Just 'power up' to 2800rpm every now & again to get the second turbo running & she's sweet as a nut!
As far as I know, this is the only turbo associated problem with the 4.4's.
As a matter of interest, whereabouts are you in God's very own county of Suffolk? I'm near BSE. 2012 Orkney Grey Westminster 4.4TDV8 with Ivory interior.........nice!

I had the secondary turbo on my 4.4 replaced as original one was weeping oil excessively

Hi Fox, I’m near needham market. I’ve just taken it to my local as they have been so good with me recently. Mansfield 4x4 couldn’t even look at it until the end of August.

Mansfield 4x4 have looked after me & the FFRR since I bought her nearly 2 yrs ago.
I had a few teething problems (oil cooler leak, turbo actuator) but apart from service items she’s been fine.
If you need any help I’m in Pakenham so not far away. 2012 Orkney Grey Westminster 4.4TDV8 with Ivory interior.........nice!

I may give them a call today to get a price. It’s definitely turbo, I’ve removed the lower intercooler turbo hoses and plenty of oil there!

Is there anything else that I should check before “investing” in new turbos?

Turbo's are a little out of my depth if I'm honest.
Ralph is head honcho at Mansfields, but if you ask for Frank [his son] he's very knowledgable & very easy to talk to/with.
Hope everything goes ok. 2012 Orkney Grey Westminster 4.4TDV8 with Ivory interior.........nice!
