Thanks for the reply and the welcome, ive read about the turbo drain pipe upgrade so will be doing that but wondered if there was any other recommended improvements to be made. |

Don't think anyone makes upgraded parts for the engine, certainly never heard of any. Could get very expensive if you have them made...

I wasnt thinking upgraded engine parts, rather precautionary upgrades, better seals, improved drain tube etc.

The turbo drain mod is covered in a maintenance bulletin which is also available in the Wiki.

That sounds like a plan, you hear a lot of intake/turbo pipes splitting as well so maybe change all them for upgraded ones.. Pete

I'd be very surprised if that proves to be the case in the immediate future. The 4.4 TDV8 is regarded as a highly reliable engine. It suffers very little in the way of turbo failures that tend to be more prevelent on the earlier 3.6 TDV8. There are 4.4 TDV8's out there with 200K miles on the clock, running without any issue. When the 4.4 TDV8 / SDV8 engines do get damaged, the concensus is that the primary cause is generally oil / water mixing due to the oil cooler failing, leading to bearing damage throughout the engine. I'd recommend regular oil changes using quality lubricant, coolant replacement ahead of the specified intervals to maintain corrosion inhibitors, and weekly checks of the coolant reservoir and oil filler cap for any signs of water / oil OR oil / water mixing. As for mods, I think it's all been mentioned by the other guys already, i.e. oil cooler replacement, look for brittle coolant hoses and connectors, ancillary drive belt tensioner cracks, evidence of turbo drain mod on secondary turbo (or later design). Im aware they are a good engine but unfortunately as with everything age is a factor, the older they get the less chance of being maintained properly so things tend to fail. I just want to do as much right as i can while i have the opportunity with the engine being out. |

For me if the engine is out i would defiantly change / inspect the following items after the main culprit for the original failure has been fixed. these are items just because the engine is out.
