Just an idea,..If it’s a very late L322 maybe it was seen as a prototype for the L405 ?.

An early vehicle which could easily have been one of the earliest to suffer the smoke problem, possibly after already having had the secondary turbo replaced but the problem persisted. An 04/14 build L405 on this forum had a factory-fitted slightly different twin drain but L405s started with the same single drain as the L322. |

My friend is an old school mechanic and very much into doing things right, hes just called saying hes disgusted with how the oilcooler sits on the sandwich plate to the block, he said the cast of the sandwich plate is disgraceful and no wonder they all leak, he said, when you place the cooler on unbolted it rocks and in places has 30 thou gap, pulls down with bolts but he finds that very poor engineering. |

And probably not helped either, by the constant heating up and cooling down.....

Oh yes, for sure. It’s such a common issue now. The specialist that did mine about 5 years ago, hadn’t done many oil coolers. Within a year they had done over a dozen....

this is why i replaced the whole cooler!! have to say when i put the new one on it did not rock. but equally i did not have the engine on a stand either. perhaps that is why they have the rubber compression gaskets i did find them odd given the bif temp swings they go through.

Mine certainly didn't rock when I fitted new gaskets. I would not have proceeded with such a condition. |
