TDV8 4.4 engine rebuild, preventative mod info ?

Hello all,

Im a new member just joined due to buying an L322 with a dead engine, the car is a late 2010 Autobiography Black, may sound insane but i was looking for a nice spec 4.4 with an engine issue so i could rebuild engine and include as many preventative mods/upgrades as possible in the hope it will last me a long time, my reasoning is that im sure due to age/mileage theres a lot of 4.4 L332’s are about due to suffer engine issues so il get a head start, buy a basically good car with an engine fail and make good/upgrade, then i know im in with the best chance for the future.

So im here to try and gain the benefit of enthusiasts knowledge and experience of the best precautions, upgrades, mods, tips from the forum to try my best to “future proof” my engine.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Firstly,
Welcome to the forum.,you are in good company on here, plenty of 4.4 TdV8 owners on here.

Secondly you will find a copy of the 2010/12 workshop manual available for free download in the Wiki section, which is full of info on the 4.4 tdV8 engine.

Finally for now search out threads relating to oil leaks on this model, which mainly refer to the rubber gaskets on the oil cooler which bake hard and fail over time but to anyone handy with spanner’s can be fixed for around £20 for replacements
plus the two O rings on the turbo oil feed pipe at the back of the engine which cost pence off eBay.

Keep us updated on any work you do.
Cheers

Thanks for the reply and the welcome, ive read about the turbo drain pipe upgrade so will be doing that but wondered if there was any other recommended improvements to be made.

Don't think anyone makes upgraded parts for the engine, certainly never heard of any. Could get very expensive if you have them made...

Why did the engine in yours fail, I thought the engines were supposed to be pretty reliable, only problems you hear is when people don't fix faults quickly and/or a turbo lets go or something similar...

Mind you I don't know much about the diesel... someone who does will be along shortly... Thumbs Up Pete

I wasnt thinking upgraded engine parts, rather precautionary upgrades, better seals, improved drain tube etc.

Not sure what happened yet, only just bought it, engine appears seized, im guessing turbo let go.

The turbo drain mod is covered in a maintenance bulletin which is also available in the Wiki.

Are you planning removing the engine to work on it or working in situ.?

That sounds like a plan, you hear a lot of intake/turbo pipes splitting as well so maybe change all them for upgraded ones.. Thumbs Up Pete

In that case it makes sense to consider doing the belts and tensioner etc at the same time.

I'd be very surprised if that proves to be the case in the immediate future. The 4.4 TDV8 is regarded as a highly reliable engine. It suffers very little in the way of turbo failures that tend to be more prevelent on the earlier 3.6 TDV8. There are 4.4 TDV8's out there with 200K miles on the clock, running without any issue.

When the 4.4 TDV8 / SDV8 engines do get damaged, the concensus is that the primary cause is generally oil / water mixing due to the oil cooler failing, leading to bearing damage throughout the engine.

I'd recommend regular oil changes using quality lubricant, coolant replacement ahead of the specified intervals to maintain corrosion inhibitors, and weekly checks of the coolant reservoir and oil filler cap for any signs of water / oil OR oil / water mixing.

As for mods, I think it's all been mentioned by the other guys already, i.e. oil cooler replacement, look for brittle coolant hoses and connectors, ancillary drive belt tensioner cracks, evidence of turbo drain mod on secondary turbo (or later design).

Im aware they are a good engine but unfortunately as with everything age is a factor, the older they get the less chance of being maintained properly so things tend to fail. I just want to do as much right as i can while i have the opportunity with the engine being out.

For me if the engine is out i would defiantly change / inspect the following items after the main culprit for the original failure has been fixed. these are items just because the engine is out.

1) Send both turbo's off for inspection and recon as needed
2) replace all aux belts, pullies & tensioners
3) replace water pump regardless of current condition
4) replace TC just because it is out
5) Service GB with new filter and fluids
6) At min change oil cooler gaskets / replace oil cooler / same with GB oil cooler and pipe work
7) remove clean and inspect EGR valve replace if required
Cool I am told the thermostat housing can get brittle inspect / change if required
9) Rocker cover gaskets i would replace just cos it is out
10) New glow plugs again it is out this job is x10 time simpler
11) inspect and flush out intercooler
12) inspect vac pipes and change if required
13) Inspect cooler pipes change if required
14) Inspect change all turbo / boost pipes change if required

this is just me i am sure those in the know will add things but to have an engine out of the car it seems silly not to inspect and replace these items. Thumbs Up
