Hi everyone

I want to have a BT / FM Cellphone charger permanently plugged into the front console lighter socket. However sockets are constantly live. I wish to convert them into ignition activated (position II) both for not having to unplug the device every time and for some added peace of mind (although nothing has happened since 2004 apparently).

I have perused the various threads but my rear fusebox configuration differs a bit, being similar to below (borrowed pic).



As there is nothing in Relay 2 position, not even the bridge piece, would simply fitting a relay equivalent to the three green ones, give me ignition activated sockets as desired, or is there more to be done or watch out for?

trust me, just buy the Green relay off ebay, and plug it in the same spot as the YELLOW one that was on my photo ( last comment on the thread ) - it works - you are over complicating things, it is just a relay, you will be fine

you can test this before buying the relay, by taking one of your existing green relays - I suggest you use the top left one, and insert it in the position where my YELLOW one was, and test it out next time you start the car - and then turn it off

Update

After removing the lower left relay (heated rear window) and plugging it into the cigar lighter R2 relay socket (right above), nothing changes. The sockets still remain live even with the key removed.

I must point out that unlike other configurations seen where the mere relay installation did the trick, in my particular case there is neither the yellow dummy relay nor the bridge piece in the R2 socket.

So there must be more to this in order to have the sockets come live only while the ignition is on.

Any advice appreciated.

It appears that your cigar lighter sockets are directly wired from the fuse board and not either provided with the option of using a fixed link or fed through a relay.
This is an arrangement used by LandRover for cars supplied to "some markets"
There is a way to get round this to achieve what you require if you are up for a bit of improvisation.
Initially can you pull out Fuse 1 on the rear fuse board, it's 20A and is the left hand fuse whilst looking at the board.
I think removing it will cut off the cigar lighter sockets.
Can you confirm this is the case.

Indeed, removing the leftmost 20A fuse cuts off the sockets.
I think you are correct in your assessment that they are directly wired through the fuse.
Which is surprising as it's the only car I've owned with always live cigar lighter sockets. I thought they all came as ignition switched with the exception of those located in the boot.

Ok, if you want to go ahead with modifying things to make the front socket ignition controlled let me know and I will make up a set of instructions for you. Nothing difficult, it can all be done in the rear compartment.
You will be able to reuse the 5 pin relay you have bought.

HOW TO CONVERT FRONT CIGAR SOCKET TO IGNITION CONTROL ; 2002 to 2005 vehicles

Materials. : 12V 4 or 5 pin 30A relay, 1m of 20A cable, 1m of 5A cable, various 20A spade connectors, cable connectors, insulating tape, heat shrink insulation or self amalgamating tape as you feel happy with.

The first thing you need to do is remove Fuse 1 20A on the rear fuse board and Fuse 5 5A on the front fuseboard.

You now need to find the white plug above the relays on the rear fuseboard that has a Red/ Black/ yellow banded cable as per the picture below.
The cable you want is 2nd from left and is Red/ Black/ with feint yellow banding on it.
This cable feeds the front cigar socket.

Wow! Hats off to you, sir! I could have never figured this out by myself and I'm grateful you took the trouble to write this all up. It's all crystal clear. I will locate the cables tomorrow and do the necessary shopping during the week. Then I can hopefully get it all donenext Saturday.
