loud clicking from behind dash

This problem started today, car starts and drives with no issues, I have no idea what it could be. After car has been left for 15mins or so, presumably all systems have gone to sleep, when I open the driver's door there is a loud clicking from behind the dash somewhere, it goes for about 10 seconds then stops. closing and opening the door does not make it start again until the car is left for over 15mins again. It sort of sounds like the click when you turn the key but it seems to go in quick bursts of 3, click click click - click click click Any ideas? 2007 TDV8 VSE

I'm not sure if they do, but when you switch the ignition off, they will assume their default position and if the nylon gears have stripped or jumped, then the motor may not be able to find its home.

Have a search, i'm sure someone posted a video with sound of a similar problem.

Mike, thanks for the pointer, Did a search for blend motor and bingo seems spot on. Funny how you think you know most thing that are likely to fail but this one is new to me. Now to find a used one in Oz.... 2007 TDV8 VSE

I don't think a new replacement costs too much.

I'm sure Dan at Duckworths would be able to sort one out for you.

Fingers crossed it might have been sorted. I removed the unit and removed the motor from the gearbox and it all seemed to move freely. I reassembled it connected back to the cars wiring then changing all the heater controls observed the final gear turning quietly. All good I thought so all back together, left the car for 30mins then opened the door to Click Click Click...... Took the unit out again and this time opened the gearbox, it all looked good and moved freely but I greased it at the appropriate points, reassembled, refitted and left the car. The next time I opened the door no clicking, I put my hand on the motor and could feel it working.

I have now had 2 weeks of silent entry so can conclude opening the blend motor gearbox to clean and re-grease cured my problem without the need for new parts. 2007 TDV8 VSE

Great writeup Wayneg, seems as though a few of us are suffering this now.

Could you give some guidance on where that motor is located and how you got it out please.

Well I thought it had fixed it. Sad

First couple of unlocks the noise was gone, now it's back but slightly different sound.

There were several "lumps" of dried grease in the gearbox that i thought was the issue, gave it a good clean and degrease and fresh grease on assembly.

All the teeth on the gears were clean and in good condition and no play on their shafts.

Flap that it drives seems free too, so it's not that.

I shall have to take another look.
