2006 Range Rover Supercharged 4.2 SC V8 Tonga Green

4.2 SC - 'E' clutch

Good morning,

4.2 SC.

The other day took it to the local LR specialist for a ‘Transmission Fault. Limited gears. . .’. This would appear after a reasonable run of say 80 miles and only at about 2 miles from home which involved narrow lanes and quite hilly. Outside of that the gearbox performed impeccably.

They preformed a software update which resulted in a quite severe jolt when going into Drive (the same with reverse) and quite violent gear changes. They think that the ‘E’ clutch has failed which basically means a reconditioned gearbox at around £2,400 and 10 hours labour.

Any thoughts, recommendations please? Range Rover 4.2 SC
2 Range Rover Classics - one from new but both rusty now.
Rover 3.5 Coupe had since new.
Subaru Legacy 3.0.
BMW K1200RS.

If they did a software update, I assume all the adaptions are also reset. There is a clearly defined run in process to reset adaptions and initially you do get some quite "positive" gear changes. After 100 miles of driving the adaptions should be stabilised and at that point the gearbox should behave itself. In theory!
I know when my gearbox was rebuilt we had a number of issues that had to be resolved. Each time the adaptions were reset and there was then a noticeable change in behavior at 100 miles (not always for the better!). I know for a fact the initial run involves some quite harsh changes.....bangs! Rob 05 L322 4.2SC

I don't know what the initial process involves as the garage did it for me and just advised me to drive various different styles up to the 100 mile mark. When I had problems I did try this at one point but it never really changed anything:

Shifting Adaptations:

Executing the following is highly recommended after a fluid change for improved shifting quality:

Vehicle should be at normal operating temperature, transmission shifter in normal mode not sports.
accelerate from a rest through the gears on a moderate throttle until 6thgear is engaged (about 55mph).
Release throttle and allow car to coast down almost to a halt, do not use the brake until the car is at walking pace (if the brake is used at any time whilst the transmission is above 2nd gear the adaption process for this cycle will be aborted).
Note: using a slight uphill gradient will help the car slow much quicker. If traffic conditions necessitate the use of the brakes during the acceleration or coasting process the cycle will have to be repeated.
Hold foot on brake for 15 seconds once car has come to a halt.
Repeat this process a total of 5 times

2-1 Tip in Thump

Vehicle should be at normal operating temperature, transmission shifter in normal mode not sports.
accelerate gently to 15 MPH
Briskly Decelerate using ample braking power until 1 MPH
“Rapidly” Accelerate using 50%-75% throttle
Repeat the process a total of 6 times

To be honest a ZF specialist would be better to advise on adaption reset process. Rob 05 L322 4.2SC
