The engine is designed for top down maintenance, and is fitted with an oil extraction tube.

Saab instituted oil extraction from the top for a few years then found sludge build-up caused engine failure so reverted to sump draining. Perhaps oils have improved since that time to avoid sludge build-up but I'll never risk my engine by taking the short-cut.

Interestingly Caterpillar diesels in mining trucks were available for a while with oil replenishment systems. Concept was that they fed a very small amount of oil through the injection system and burnt it slowly so that all that was needed was the addition of oil to top off when needed. Saved service time, did away with oil disposal requirement, saved liability of oil drainage in workshops etc and consequent loose plugs and forgotten refills etc. larger sumps and remote reservoirs provided reserve capacity. Big benefit was that oil quality on average was better as it never degraded to the end of oil change interval when additives were depleted.
Interestingly it was discontinued I think because of potential emissions related issues.
Bit off topic but might have protected you from the dreaded “ finger” problem which caused your issue in the first place.

Hi everyone,

Quick update, it's still smoking, but doesn't appear to be loosing any oil (at least not on the dipstick) I have however now developed a flat (won't start) battery every morning and evening when I finish work! I will have to ask in another post about that one.

I will keep driving the car daily in the hope the smoke will stop soon when everything is burnt off

I can't believe they dropped the sump bung in a JLR main dealers! Are you quite sure you were not watching him do something else sir? JLR dealers all service cars to the manufacturers specs and a 4.4TDV8 is definitely a suck oil out engine as per JLR Topix...

I certainly wouldn't be doing any of this stuff myself if id just paid to have it serviced sir... Whistle Its down to the dealer that made a mistake with the oil seal on the filter housing to A, clean up the mess... B, reimburse you for your out of pocket expenses (oil etc etc etc) and C, to make sure your 100% happy with the job you have just paid ALOT of money to have done!

One last point to make... What oil have you used to top up with? Was it 100% the correct grade/coded oil for the DPF? Where and what did you buy? i ask as your oil type/grade is critical and will not mix properly with a generic 5/30 5/40 10/30 etc etc diesel motor oil off the shelf in a service station for example... The oil needs to meet a code criteria (I don't have that info here right now to hand) which is in your service book... If, your not 100% sure! You need to go back and tell them. Its their issue to put right Thumbs Up

It's booked in today at a main dealer. So I will update you later.

Absolutely, sump plug was removed and oil drained from below. I asked on the phone about sucking oil out and the service manager said that only applys to the first 4 services, after 4 services or 80k miles they drain from the sump. Hence the different service specs in the book for given millages.

As for oil I bought some from the same dealer, it was shel helix ultra 5w 30 genuine oil. I am defiantly going to give them some stick Thumbs Up

Quick update. No more leaks and oil level is fine. Looks like the inner V was full of oil from the oil seal breaking and has finally burnt off.
