The engine is designed for top down maintenance, and is fitted with an oil extraction tube.

Interestingly Caterpillar diesels in mining trucks were available for a while with oil replenishment systems. Concept was that they fed a very small amount of oil through the injection system and burnt it slowly so that all that was needed was the addition of oil to top off when needed. Saved service time, did away with oil disposal requirement, saved liability of oil drainage in workshops etc and consequent loose plugs and forgotten refills etc. larger sumps and remote reservoirs provided reserve capacity. Big benefit was that oil quality on average was better as it never degraded to the end of oil change interval when additives were depleted.

I can't believe they dropped the sump bung in a JLR main dealers! Are you quite sure you were not watching him do something else sir? JLR dealers all service cars to the manufacturers specs and a 4.4TDV8 is definitely a suck oil out engine as per JLR Topix...

Quick update. No more leaks and oil level is fine. Looks like the inner V was full of oil from the oil seal breaking and has finally burnt off. |
