Gearbox sump dripping

Good Afternoon,

Noticed a damp patch on the ground so got under it and noticed the front drivers side
Of the plastic sump to be wet slightly. It looks like it is coming from a large wiring plug
Just above as this seems wettest, Can this leak? Or would it just be the sump weeping and the oil blowing
Around? The fluid looks clear and does not smell like normal gear oil.

I have cleaned it up and re torqued the sump bolts and will check again.

Cheers

Steve.

Hi Steve, yes the wiring plug does leak, it has an O ring on it and its not uncommon to spring a leak. They’re not difficult to change and are usually done with a gearbox service as the plastic sump has to come off, I’m sure there is some stuff in the wiki on how to tackle them.

Thanks Dave,

That looks like the culprit. Well looks like it will have to wait till it either warms up a bit or
We can move around again. Looks minimal so should be ok for a while.

Thanks again

Steve.

Search gearbox sleeve on here, a few bits and bobs on it.

When you get a chance, do the fluid pan and sleeve and you will be sorted. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

bloddy well are ... PITA to get them back in to the correct position Wink

But this certainly looks like where the leak is coming from. [EDIT removed] .

I had the pan and oil changed when I bought the car four years ago by LR, but reading RRPhil guide
You have to remove a clip with the pan off to take the sleeve out?

I take it there is no way of doing it with dropping the pan?

Thanks

I'm pretty sure the locking mechanism is inside the gearbox so you have no option but to drop the pan. I remember the sleeve being a bit of a battle to get installed and resorting to a length of wood as a lever to encourage it. 2016 Skoda Octavia VRS Estate

The 2007 car I’ve just purchased is damp in the same area so I’ve bought the sleeve and a few other bits to do when I change the oil and filter in the gearbox. 2002 4.6 Vogue SE - Alveston Red with Lightstone Leather

I bought this set of seals from eBay

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/genuine-bmw-zf-...2749.l2649

They arrived within 24 hours of purchasing and are all stamped ZF. Well, the 2 plastic ones are, the 4 rubber dowels have different colours painted on them.

Once my oil pan and oil arrives from Duckworths I'll be doing the same job.

Here's a picture of the seals if it's of any interest.
