The G4 does look nice, and I was tempted by one of the two on ebay a while back.

But for me there are a few problems which put me off.

1. I'd want to offroad it properly, and I know the arse hangs out too much on a FFRR and it's too wide for a fair % of the offroading we do in the UK. So I'd still need a Defender... and a sensible car for everyday.

2. The original ones have the non-supercharged petrol engine, so you get TDV8 power with a much higher fuel consumption, so it'd be expensive to take it anywhere when the other car has far better fuel economy. Even the Camel with it's HUGE roofrack gets 28mpg, and is better offroad.

To me the FFRR G4 is a nice looking toy, but it's halfway between sensible daily car (400 miles a week in my case) and serious offroader, while not doing either of these as good as other LR products I have.

Just my opinion... Rolling Eyes

It has a good pose factor though. Thumbs Up

The original G4 Exped roof rack was made by Safety Devices IIRC - looks like marine ply treated with rubber compound paint and the 3M nonslip treads we use onboard for the pilot ladder treads and are also available from good yottie shops.

The proper LR/ safety devices racks also have a foam rubber seal that effectively closes any gap between the front solid edge of the rack and the car's roof and stops the headache inducing whistle above 50. Don't know how good it really is but a friend of my has an LR Exped rack for his RRS and drives it from Hasselt in belgium to Wick in the north of Scotalnd frequently and claims there is no extra noise............. 2018 Mini Countryman Cooper S E All4 PHEV in Melting Silver - it’s whisper quiet in EV and polluter modes

For me the Disco G4 is the one to lust after. The disco is a much more utilitarian vehicle to start with, and how can you not say no to an orange disco? *Gone* Discovery3 HSE

OK decided on a D3 with all the G4 Toys and stickers.

I have a choice of Black or Dark Green and as alweays appreciate your views on what the finished product would look like in these colours (I an not trying to directly replicate a G4 just a good looking brutish off-road D3) Question

I agree, Disco in G4 spec does look better IMHO.
It's a more rugged looking vehicle overall.

Gaz, wrap it in G4 orange! Thumbs Up It'll certainly look the part then.
Might as well do it properly, and it'll protect the paint if you offroad it.

Good idea but I think wrapping may be a bit extravagant for what I have in mind!

And fitting a Winch, bullbar, roofrack, spotlights and more aggressive tyres (G4 spec) isn't ? Smile
I just think... if you are going to do it, make it look the part! Mr. Green

But if you are just making a standard offroad Disco, then yes. Why spend the extra cash.

The cars I am looking at have 17" wheels can anybody recommend some ideas for M&S tyres that will fit the rims without rubbing. I would prefer 275/265 width.
