Starting issues, lots of warning messages...

Good evening all,

I have a 2005my touchscreen Vogue, 3.0 TD6.

A little while ago it started playing up when turning the key to the 'on' position. The amber warning triangle which indicates 'do not turn engine over' illuminates, I get a ding and various messages including 'fuel inject system' 'dsc inactive' 'air susp inactive' and 'trans failsafe prog'. It scrolls through these messages three or four times before the Amber triangle goes out and the usual lights come up on the dash and it starts and runs like a dream!

I have done several leak back tests on the injectors and replaced 3 suspect ones, leaking back with far too much or a bit less than the others. I replaced the battery to a 100aH Yuasu. I've replaced the pump under the tank.

I've spoken to a couple of highly respected RR specialists, and been to one of them. The only fault codes were EGR and Glow Module, which when cleared don't help the issue.

The last guru I spoke to suggested the ignition switch may be the culprit. However, I'm getting reluctant to spend more money on parts which may not be faulty.

Has anyone else had this issue, or any ideas please?! Any advice or experience will be greatly appreciated.

Regards, Tim

It may be the ignition switch but I am betting on the ABS sensor, always bound to set all those things off, but strange that they all clear. .

I know that you've replaced the battery, but have you checked the voltage? low voltage can play havoc with the screen of doom, it can throw up all sorts of funny messages, when what it really means is "voltage low" , but for some inexplicable reason this was omitted from it's vocabulary Laughing

And if your alternator isn't putting out quite enough volts then that could be the cause...... maybe get a jump off another car, that's running, so that the ecu is seeing 13.5 volts... it's a quick elimination Thumbs Up Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

I agree with Miggit, it still points towards low voltage and maybe you have a voltage drain or the alternator is giving you issues. Just try measuring the voltage under various circumstances and check the drain amperage. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

Hi guys,

Thanks for the speedy replies. I'll check the voltage at the battery and at a few points in the fuse box before my wife takes it on the school run. It's been parked up since about 1945 last night so now would be the obvious time for a suspicious reading. It's wired that it does it so often and so regimented though, even if you pop into a shop and come back to it ten minutes later- I suppose I should also check the earthing strap from the battery to the body for continuity! I shan't be using it to do any getaway driving... Very Happy

I'll post an update shortly.

Cheers, Tim

Well, I need a new multimeter!

I opened the bonnet and hooked up my meter before I put the key in the ignition, and the voltage ROSE steadily from 15.3v to 16.2v even with all the gubbins going for unlocking the doors!! Tested meter on work van to prevent a mild heart attack and it told me the van was sitting at 16.5v, so definitely not a happy multimeter.

Weirdly though, as I was wondering what the heck was going on it was cycling through its various faults, and when I established that the meter was faulty flicked the key briefly back one turn and then back to the 'on' position and the dash lit up normally and the truck started as normal- the engine can't have turned more than two revolutions before it fired.

I'll be off to the workshop when I'm at work to borrow the multimeter from there and try again!

Whistle You might just have answered your own question Shocked

If your multi meter is showing 16.5 on a good working system and it was showing something closer to 12.5 when all your woes erupted... that could explain it. If 16.5 in the real world translates in to 12.5, then 12.5 is going to be around 10 volts Shocked Shocked And that's the sort of voltage that will cause all the silly messages, but still have enough left in the battery to start the engine..... And that is where Roverphobia kicks in and you start to question your very existence Shocked Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter

You gotta laugh, or the'd cart you off Wink

When I first saw your last post you said that the car had been parked up since 1945.... I started thinking dam that's an early prototype, and then I saw the "last night" and had a chuckle Thumbs Up Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

Haha!

Ok, I got two multimeters from the yard yesterday, one of them brand new and unopened. Tested the battery voltage when the screen of doom was playing up and then when I managed to get it to start.

When the truck is unlocked the voltage is 12.3-12.4v. Likewise win the key in the ignition and turned to the 'on' position. When it decided to start I tested the alternator at 14.1v. I've not got jump leads at the moment as they are in the back of a wagon that's gone somewhere, but I'm doubting that it will make any difference given the readings I've got....

I need to go through the fuse board and test which fuses are live when the screen of doom is on, and then test when the truck is feeling happy. Hopefully then one of my gurus will be able to tell me which circuits aren't being activated and try to pinpoint the problem further.

It's very strange, as well as infuriating, as everything works fine and the truck runs beautifully when it behaves! I've noticed that when the key is turned and it's feeling naughty the small low pressure pump doesn't kick in, but as soon as the error messages disappear and the usual dash lights come on it kicks in and the truck starts! Could this point to anything? The pump is new and hasn't changed the way it misbehaves at all!

Thanks so far, and thanks in advance for any further suggestions or advice!

It's getting to a point where I'm even considering booking it in at Land Rover! Shocked Shocked Shocked

Got to ask is you sat nav and radio behaving? Whistle only if they have got damp / drowned, it can play havoc with the electrical system, throws up all sorts of messages on the screen of doom Rolling Eyes

From the way your describing the faults, it almost feels like it's an immobiliser fault, may be there's a short / bad connection in that circuit and it's causing the delay...

Also might be worth checking under the front passenger seat... the BCM is under there and if it's had a bath then this will cause issues...

Water has always been the Achilles heal of the Range Rover... I think it was designed in to the car in the 60's and they have carried on the tradition through out development Rolling with laughter One has to wonder how many drowned Range Rovers are scattered around the test tracks of Land Rover,,, hiding at the bottom of large puddles Rolling Eyes Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... LOL!! Rolling with laughter I upset my wife (and my colleagues!) when I call it a 'car'.... Living in Devon I think it's a criminal offence to call any vehicle with four wheel drive capabilities anything other than a truck!

Thanks for your input guys, and thanks to miggit in particular for the continued advice. Thumbs Up No, not had problems with the radio/sat nav that I know of. I think maybe once I had a blank screen but just hit the power button and it came back on so I've never been concerned about it or looked into it further. I have fitted the Russian/German aftermarket Bluetooth music jobby at great expense but is a very good bit of kit- daughter decided to treat us to some 90's rave music the other evening which made me feel half drug dealer- but it is black and has tinted windows! Laughing

I tend to agree that it must be electrically related, I am drawn to the ignition switch but only because the specialist I went to see said they are prone to fail and he has seen a similar issue before. BUT... IMMOBILISER! Very obvious but not something I have given any thought to. Is there an immobiliser ECU? Is it something which should show up on Snap On diagnostics or a similar system? I'll have to do some research on where the immobiliser bits are so I can look at the europlugs etc.

Oh yes there is an immobiliser and it's a pita, linked to central locking, ignition and steering lock, and possibly the gearbox too..... I vaguely remember it's part of the BCM but I could be wrong...

You repairer is sort of right when he says it's the ignition switch.... but it's more likely to be the send / receive part of the transponder chip.. it lurks in the ignition switch.... if it doesn't see the key, or get the right resonance then it don't start... in fact it don't do anything Evil or Very Mad It's also responsible for unlocking the steering lock... you should hear the lock disengage when you put the key in the lock.. you don't have to turn it Thumbs Up Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Thanks again miggit

Yes I do hear the steering lock release mechanically when I put the key in. It's my lovely lady's birthday tomorrow so I don't want to play around with the truck and ignore her, but I'll have a good look at the BCM (I assume that means body control module?) and check the plugs etc. in the next couple of days... In the mean time there's a suggestion that we buy a td4 freelander (replaced by the RR) whilst we get to the bottom of this! Not the worst idea I've heard, as we did love our lil flandy!!

Cheers, T

I know, the irony!! My wife is going to have to slum it in a kangoo van which we aren't using at work for a few days, and I'm taking the RR up to my specialist in Somerset for him to have for a few days because l've had enough!! The Censored thing won't even start now!!

Thanks for all the advice so far!
