Our FFRR has had this issue since we got it 6months ago. Coming into roundabouts and when manoeuvring the steering gets intermittently heavy.

I've searched the forum and found three failure modes so far:
Servotronic valve failing - as per Stan's experience http://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic7311.html
BCM failing - http://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic37139.html
PAS Pump failing - http://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic33412.html

I've got no codes stored in the BCM, but can't tell from my search is if anyone has had a servotronic or BCM issue without a code being stored or if it's most likely that its a pump fault?

Not silly at all, but yes first thing I looked at unfortunately. I've had BMW's in the past, so use to leaky PAS systems!

Sounds like the steering transducer, when it starts to go you get intermittent heavy steering.

When you experienced it did you get error codes in the BCM? Or did you just replace and the problem went away?

I had an issue, trying to fit a dash cam, and get a supply from the fuse box, in glovebox. I piggybacked off a fuse, and immediately, my steering was heavier, better at speed, but hard to do slow hard turns. I removed piggy back wire, and it went better. It turned out to be the servotronic supply.
Do you have any wiring add-ons?
New head unit?

A small amplifier for an iPod jack wired into something in the centre console, can't remember exactly what now, but the register before I put that in.

No I didn't get any error codes and when I fitted the new one the steering was back to nice and light again.

That's a useful data point then, servotronic valve with no codes.

Just to close this out.

Now fixed, the culprit was the PAS Pump.

Hopes this helps others in the future.

I had the same on my 2004 car, pump needed to be replaced. Only Range Rovers since 1988
