Battery drain......sad face

Hello all.
I need help/advice/anything.
About 2 weeks ago on a Saturday the L322 did not start around 2pm after my Wife had got to her destination (about 8 mlies from home)

Friend jumped it and all was well that day. Following day no problems, started it many times on the drive but Monday morning......Dead!

Since then I have jumped it or had the AA out for the home start.
Last week Wednesday around 5ish after I had been driving it for most of the day the battery died on returning back to the car and the AA came to the rescue.

Since Thursday last week until today the car started each time bit today nothing! It had a service yesterday at a independent Land Rover Garage (Bennington 4 by 4) and he couldn't find anything wrong. He tested it after the shut down mode but nothing.

The only thing he said was the battery is the wrong type, I currently have a 800 and he advised it must have a 900 minimum to handle the load.

Sorry to go on and on but I hope I have added everything so someone can help. I don't want to go to the main dealer as I can't afford but running out of options specially when I have a 4 year old daugther in a car that isn't currently reliable

Almost impossible to say. Personally, I would start with the Final Stage Resistor. Do a search for it on here for more details. 2006 4.2 SC

I mentioned this to the garage but he didn't want to commit.
I have watched many you tube clips on changing it myself and the part is only 35/40 so I thought it was worth a shot?

Are you sure the battery is dead when your car won't start?
How do you know it is dead?
When it doesn't start have you checked the battery voltage?
When it doesn't start have you tried turning the headlights on?
When it doesn't start do you have to recharge the battery before it will start again?

Start methodically pulling fuses - perhaps you can pull the one to FSR circuit to see the difference.

You can get a current meter like this - leave it in the car in relevant fuse after car goes to sleep (approx 15 minutes)



The problem may be made worse by the faqct that the batteries do not like to be fully discharged, and they are never quite the same again afterwards. Howard

My 2012 car suffered a battery drain due to a fault with the fuel burning heater software when it was about 18 months old. The battery had to be recharged fully to allow the dealer to check what had caused the problem on the diagnostic system. The battery then had to be checked (over the course of the next day, presumably the test is whether it can still hold charge) to see whether the drain had ruined it. It had and the battery was replaced under warranty. Some months later the (new) battery was again drained, this time due to a fault with the locking software. Again the battery had to be recharged fully to allow the dealer to check what had caused the problem, and again the battery then had to be checked over the following day. This time the battery could still be used.

If my experience is a guide, you may need to charge the battery fully (with a battery charger, outside the car), then have a diagnostic test done on what is causing your problem, then fix that problem and finally test the battery over the next day to see whether it is still useable. Being relatively new did not prevent my first battery from being ruined. Sorry that I cannot offer an easier and cheaper solution. Only Range Rovers since 1988

Seems odd to me why a battery would start and run then just a few hours later be dead,sounds more like a bad connection to me,check all battery,starter,alternator etc connections are clean and tight to start with.

Thank you all!!!!
With today's AA call out, before he jump it he checked the power and it was on 7.6 volts.
He personally believes s9mething is chipping away at the battery when off but can't say what obviously.

A new battery is going in on Monday so we can start from there.


When I was saying the battery was dead on start up I meant there wasn't enough to kick start. The lights come on the dash and when I turn to start there is a click sound and the lights all start flickering.

If your going to troubleshoot with a new battery, don't leave it connected overnight, pull it down to 7 volts a few times and it won't thank you..... Thumbs Up Thumbs Up Pete

Can't sleep! This car has me thinking overtime.
Once the new battery is in and if it still drains I'm screwed.

I'm not great with fixing/checking so if my independent garage can't help then maybe main dealer is my only hope.

I will change the FSR myself as that's stright forward but the rest I have no clue.

Another free check is to open the boot, open the passenger side cubby hole, then shut the boot, turn off and lock the car, you will notice the GPS unit which is the top one in the boot cubby will have a red light showing if you look through the rear window... leave it for 20 mins and see if it's still on, these have given problems in the past...

DON'T take it anywhere near the main dealer, for one most of them will have never worked on one at your FF's age and have no clue how it works. the other thing they are good at doing is just swapping stuff, charging you £500 and saying it's fixed, when it goes flat in two days you go through it all again and pay them another £500....

Cheaper to take a day off and book it in with Cam Tech Craig (site sponsor) he will sort it for you... Thumbs Up

Always remember if the Dealer swaps a component and it does not fix the problem, they already have an excuse as to why it did not fix the problem before you even ask the question.

Usually something like - ahh ... well ... there is obviously another underlying problem which is in addition to the one we fixed (which really was a problem honest the computer said so)

Prime example on here the other day - they told a guy they had to change the knock sensors as the car had a misfire and the computer showed "knock sensor fault" - £600. What they failed to realise is that a misfire throws this fault - which is likely to be caused by a spark plug or coil pack (a few quid to change). So basically the misfire causes the "knock sensor fault", not the "knock sensor" causing the misfire.

Alternatively do a search on posts here to see if you can find an Indy good closer to you Howard

Measure the voltage across each fuse and you can calculate the current based on it's resistance. Thumbs Up

I will do the boot test today.
