SC Brake Upgrade

I'm about to order discs and pads for the front of my 2006 SC.

I was wondering, just out of interest, are the 6 piston Brembo calipers from the newer cars a straight swap for the 4 piston ones fitted to my car? I'm just wondering if the hubs and mounting points for the callipers are the same.

The 6 piston brakes on the 4.4 TDV8 we've got are better then the ones on the 4.2 SC so am wondering if it's worth the hassle of changing them.

Looking at microcat it is a different part number for the hub carrier, and they do attach differently. The 4 pots are the threaded part of the attachment so the bolts go through the hub carrier and into the caliper, on the 6 pots the carrier is threaded and the bolts go through the caliper and thread into the hub. I presume that this was because folks kept stripping the threads in the 4 pot calipers. When changing discs. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Ahh, that ends that idea then.

I can't be bothered with the hassle of changing the hubs as well!

New Brembo discs and pads it is then Smile

on the D3 and D4 the bit the carrier bolts too is the same config as the 6 pots with the thread in the hub section not the caliper itself.

It might be doable, but I'm not sure that it is straightforwards. Also remember that they are bigger callipers so may require different wheels. Just something to bear in mind. Does rather depend on what you have fitted at the moment though.

Seem to remember the guys over on D3 said 19" minimum to clear 4 pots but 20" needed to clear 6 pots-But thats on D3/rrs so may be different on FFRR but i suppose if its a 4.2sc it will probably have 20s anyway Thumbs Up Paul

I've decided to give this a bit more thought...

So far, I've worked out that I need:

LR016659 - RH 6 pot caliper
LR016661 - LH 6 pot caliper

LR010677 - RH Front Knuckle
LR010678 - LH Front Knuckle

LR031845 x 2 - Front Brake Discs
LR083935 - Front Brake Pads

I'm using man maths at the moment... My front brakes need the discs and pads doing and upgrading them now makes sense Laughing

One thing I am wondering about after speaking with a friend last night... Will the master cylinder need changing due to the bigger calipers needing more pressure/fluid to work them?

Thanks Mikey. Thumbs Up

I've compiled a list of everything I think I'll need...

Hubs & new wheel bearings
Calipers
Flexi hoses
Discs
Pads

Whilst I'm in there I'm going to renew both front wheel bearings when changing the hubs and give anything that needs changing a new lease of life. Seeing as it passed it's MOT without any advisories I'm hoping there won't be very much.

If anybody wants a set of 4 piston Brembo's with new genuine LR flexi hoses on them, get in touch Laughing

To be honest, it does seem pointless. The 4 piston brakes are more than enough for these.

Good luck though Thumbs Up Alex

When you drive our 4.4 TDV8 with the 6 piston brembo calipers on it and then drive the 4.2 SC with the 4 piston brembo's on it there is a noticeable difference. The newer brakes feel more sure footed and don't fade like the earlier ones do if working them hard.

I do agree though, for the amount of time I use the car and the way I drive it, I won't notice much difference at all in day to day driving so it is a bit pointless. However, the bigger brakes do look *much* bigger and better behind the wheels. They fill the wheel much more. When looking at them side by side the discs on the 4.2 SC actually look small. Laughing

Hey ho, it'll give me something to do and keep me out from under the wifes feet for a while... Well, until she sees the bill for calipers along with genuine discs and pads for both the front and rear, then I'll be well and truly in the dog house. Laughing

Anyway, more updates to follow when I pluck up the courage to start buying things! Thumbs Up
