Flip up cup holder fix

Yesterday drivers cup holder in the centre console failed to close and stay shut, checking how much a new one would be I nearly fell off my perch, (part number FJI000020PUYG at £ 160 )

So here is a fix if yours will not shut.

The cup holder has always been a bit temperamental and when open, the lid part had always touched the centre console so now was a time to find out why.

To take the centre console apart look at this link, ( ) no need to take the selector handle or hand brake grip off as there is room for taking the cup holder off with a chubby screw driver T 20 end, 3 screws.

Top screw had a washer in place.

The 2 lower screws, second one next to the one in the picture but hidden

And its out.The 5 screws T10 and red arrow plastic push fit to remove.

Undo 5 T10 torque screws and remove panel.

Retractable spring was fine and the tabs that locate in the body housing where good. If these are worn a simple 2mm stainless bar would replace these by drilling through the plastic.
The slide tabs are metal.

Locking mechanism when you push down to raise the cup holder from home and to lock when returning, no faults here either.

Need a clean I think!
Note all teeth and guides are good.
Also note how the spring is seated for re assembly

Plastic pivot on the cup holder to remove, these are push fit on.

This locks the cup holder in place when open and should work freely, mine was sticky with coffee, cleaned up and freed up with wd40 nicely. Now I know why the cup holder hit the top of the centre console when open.

The end panel splitting away from the main body when the cup holder is closed.
Reason, the cup holder was pivoting inside the main body due to the top tab missing and not guiding in the slot.

Top locating tab missing hence the body of cup holder would not stay closed.
Arrow 2.5mm hole drilled ready for new tab to run in guide.
Tab cut from 2.5mm stainless rod, bent 90 deg and push fit in, its a snug fit

The next issue was that the cup holder was catching the inside of this tab, just enough to stop it closing fully

Filled off a corner and a groove in the plastic body of the cup holder so it would miss, works a treat now

Care to refit all together and test.
Fit it into the console and retest before screwing down the centre console.

Well that just saved me some pennies, it works for me and better than before !

Hope it help someone who has same problem. If it dont work.......burn it!

If the IId tool cant fix it.......burn the FF.

If the FF cant be fixed......buy a Land Cruiser!

If the LC cant be fixed..............................................BUY a horse !!

I thought it might help someone in the future as these are quit expensive new now. If it dont work.......burn it!

If the IId tool cant fix it.......burn the FF.

If the FF cant be fixed......buy a Land Cruiser!

If the LC cant be fixed..............................................BUY a horse !!

Thanks Welshdragon, very helpful. On my 2004 the guide pins and tracks are different. The tracks on the housing are molded in and closed. The pin on the bottom is metal but the upper pins are small about 8mm ovals. One that broke won't glue with ABS glue. Trying superglue. The other one is gone. Not sure how to sort that one out yet but will post a pic when I do. Obscene price is the mother of invention.

Good thing the E brake handle didn't need to come off because mine wasn't letting go.

I had a look at mine again before I started stripping it down and found a half melted sweet, a small crayon and a 2p coin in the bottom. After a bit of fiddling with long nose pliers and a screwdriver with blue-tac on the end (to lift out the coin and broken crayon bits) its closing again Previous owners rug rats must have used it as a secret hiding place

OK mine is back in. Only one ABS guide pin is holding but is is working. Probably won't use it much but it looks much better. All kinds of stuff under the main console just forward of the shifter. Total puzzlement how it got there.

I did a similar fix on ours yesterday. I used a couple of small screws to replace the two broken pins (I only spotted one broken pin last time). I did have to enlarge the grooves with a dremel, but one of the abrasive bits was just the right size so it was fairly straight forward.

I left the cupholder itself out initially when I reassembled so i could get in with a grinding wheel on the dremel to grind the tips of the screws flush with the housing before installing the cuphoulder with the two plastic clips. Works a treat now.
