I understand the amp uses an emulated on/off, but that's all I know at this point.......

Well I've just read through the topic that you posted the link to mjdronsfield and it looks like I'm going to be removing the DSP and wiring directly to the speakers, which in many ways is a shame.

Pete removed all his original kit and wired directly to speakers, but does not have a signal to all the speakers I believe.

Connecting up to all of the speakers without the amp would be easy, yes. And the best solution. One channel per door, not using the speaker in the dash top centre, and driving the sub woofer with the head unit's dedicated feed would I think provide much the same sound as original.

Being a bit of a hi-fi 'ist and having a tri-active LINN setup in the house, I like things to sound right. I have the BM54 stage 2 amp upgrade and bmw bluetooth etc I find the system now does exactly what I want, so never really looked much at these head unit replacements. That said, I see why people do it and it's more modern with extra functionality, so I get it.

Fooling the existing system should work in theory if you use connectors / phone adapter kits that use the correct plug pickups on the BM54.

That looks like it just enables a different source to be connected where the cd changer was, but the emulated on off IBus signal would still be sent from the head unit in the dash when you press the on off knob, so I don't think it would help.

And whilst I don't want to muddy the waters, don't forget that the HK system fitted is an active system, in that the speakers do not have crossovers built into them, it's done in the DSP, so if you wire directly to the speakers from your new head unit, you will be feeding a full range signal to all the speakers, which were designed to only operate within a set frequency range. The high range tweeter tends not to like being fed bass frequencies.
