i've been seriously considering fitting the £300 [+ £40 for DAB] integral carplay/android auto unit but i didnt want to mess with the OE dab setup..

so i have upgraded my 7'' portable screen to a 9''....same kind of mounting to the air vents and clearly visible..

old 7''

new 9''

great thing about this new unit is that AA will connect wirelessly so no more connecting the phone via a cable..
not so great is that it runs the phone battery down quicker so you need to keep an eye on the phone's battery.

i have a frenchland holiday in June so that will be a good test.. ... - .- -.

Looks very much like the same direction JLR design department are moving in Cool

The new one looks a much tidier install without the plugs on the side. What does it do for audio ? I'd like something like that for satnav via CarPlay but would also want a decent audio connection.

It looks much better than using my phone in a cradle

you can use the built in speaker Alistair ,or the unit has a FM transmitter or by direct cable into the aux input..

the FM works by tuning the unit to a spare FM frequency on the FF radio.. ... - .- -.

Hmm - Aux input - that makes it a contender

I'd expect inbuilt speaker & FM tuner to sound a bit pants from prior experience with such things, but the tech may have improved.

Thanks Stan - Off to search eBay.fr Smile

i use the units built in speaker as its only for nav directions and i can also listen to the FF's DAB at the same time..

i did try the FM thing and its surprisingly good...

also theres an input for a camera be it a reverse one or forward looking one .. ... - .- -.

Just my opinion but to me that looks so naff & tacky (blocks the vents too I should imagine).

You're going to hate the new models then - everything is headed in that direction Cool

This is the MY2024 - OK the vents clear, but the floating iPad look is all the rage Laughing

The current range of touchscreens look so naff, fortunately for me (in what's left of my lifetime) there will still be enough vehicles around that I can drive (rather than just operate) & they will have switches & knobs rather than dangerous touchscreens.

I find it strange that we can be prosecuted for pressing a couple of "buttons" on a mobile to make a hands free call, but we are "allowed" to faff around & take our eyes off the road to scroll though a series of menus to adjust such mundane things as the air-con.

If I won serious money on the lottery I would not buy any vehicle that had a touch screen for basic vehicle functions.

Maybe I should start a new thread, don't want to upset anyone ![/b]

@Alistair, since having the 'tablet' thingy i've noticed many new cars having these stick up screens [bmw etc] and you can see the logic in the maintenance side if the unit gets damaged or goes wrong. ... - .- -.

These CarPlay tablets have certainly improved and got cheaper in the last 12 months.
