Hungary 2012 Range Rover Vogue TDV8 Buckingham Blue

Is there any update in this regard? Personal experience after the operation? Did it get better, did it worth it?
I just started noticing the smoke so consider the visit to dealer...

I have now had this twice, once straight after collecting the car a few months back, But only once since, today!

Car had been in for the tailgate to be replaced, and looking at the dash cam it had pootled round he workshop and been left idling for quite a while on occasions, lots of starting moving and turning off too. Today I drive it up the M1 to chesterfield through the roadworks, hadn't really planted the foot at all, pulled of from the roundabout on exit, bit of boot, and quite a bit of white smoke.

Eased off smoke disappeared, Applied the boot again, much less. Drove home in the same manner, 50-70 on the M1 then a real big boot out of the a50 roundabout, redline in first 4 gears! Nothing.

Wasn't thinking that the turbo drain problem was intermittent! Possibly just a build up of something from the ticking over and slow driving, but would have though driving back the same way would replicate the problem!

Am going to keep an eye on it, plenty of warranty left, so if it becomes a regular occurrence I will get it in! There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

The turbo drain problem is caused by a build-up of oil over time when the secondary turbo is not regularly used. Once the oil is blown out by a good burst of secondary turbo use the smoke will not re-appear until oil has once again accumulated in the inlet tract due to lack of use of the secondary turbo. The build-up occurs because the drain is ineffective via the scavenger pump once the engine stops yet a small amount of pressurised oil is still flowing to the turbo, which then finds its way past the turbo seals which were never designed to contain oil from a drain that is effectively blocked. The revised drain has an additional direct drain to the sump so that the drain can empty with the engine no longer running.

That's kind of how I figured it happened, sequential turbos will inevitably have the problem of under use for the secondary turbo, especially when they are driven conservatively......

Probably why I haven't seen the smoke as I will quite often rev past the point where the secondary kicks in. Might be worth mentioning to the dealer on Monday to prime them for the big job...... There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Hi guys! I have a new to me 12/13 L405 - 4.4 TDV8 with 70.000km. every time I ride the car I raise the RPM´s to 3.000 to burn the oil in the turbo, after 5.000 km of the first oil change I noticed that the oil level is going down, not much, but it is definitely going down. Do you guys see any problem in not doing the TBS service and keep adding about 1 lt of oil every 10.000 km? Thank you all.

That sounds a reasonable level to top up. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

10,000 km... 6,250 miles seems a good point to change the oil and filter, not top it up, to me... irrespective of manufacturers recommend service intervals. Check the oil dilution figure with your iid , and definitely change the oil if it is approaching 7.0.

I do change the oil and filter every 10.000 km, my question was:

- Do you think is a problem to keep filling the oil (about 1lt between oil changes) instead of doing the turbo oil drainage TBS service

Apologize for my bad english.

Thank you all !!!

No, I don’t personally think that 1L is an unreasonable top up between oil changes.

I never had the drain mod on my 322. Just kept an eye on the oil and gave it a good foot down clear out every so often. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜
