Strange vibration at speed

This afternoon I got a strange vibration on the motorway home.

If I stay above 55/60 for 5-10minutes I got a vibration best described as what you would get going over a cobblestone road at a very slow speed, like 1 vibration every 2seconds to a second but if I slow down it goes away when I get below 45 but comes back as soon as I get back to that speed.

I think it could be a weight balance issue on that wheel as its coming from the passenger front area though I can't feel it through the steering wheel too much Sad

Other option I can think of is low brake pad material or a binding caliper on that side ??? FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

I'll bet it's a ball joint. My money is on the lower control arm. Does it start to show up just as you start turning as well? Like long sweeping corners? Previously..

No just on the straight and angle of wheel seemed to make no difference when pulling onto the hard shoulder from lane 2 as I was just about to creep past a lorry Sad FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

Strange this thread should pop up... mine is doing something very similar. Very distinct thumping noise/feeling (in my case from rear) almost as if there is a large stone caught in the tyre treads. Does it for about 10 minutes then goes away only to reappear for 10 minutes or so every hour.

Like you I'm thinking either wheel balancing or a sticking caliper. Cars in later today for balancing and if that fails the rear brakes are coming apart tonight. Be interesting to see what you find. I'm kinda suspecting the balancing won't work as I can't see why it would come and go. Lloyd Barnes

Well mine hasn't re-appeared im afraid Lloyd Smile

Though i am running the MTR's all the time now due to the weather their noise could mask it but i certainly dont feel it in the wheel or car Smile

Fingers crossed you nail it down Smile I think if mine comes back new pads and discs will be on sooner rather later as i know they are getting low. FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

Well, in my case the culprit seems clear once the wheel was off. Sticking O/S/R caliper. Brake pads virtually gone (almost no wear on the other side).

Where's the best place to get a caliper from sharpish if I don't fancy paying stealer prices? Lloyd Barnes

Same here , I was getting what I would describe as a juddering effect, noticeable around 50mph and if I accelerated quicky it was worse but if I did it slowly it was a bit better. If I used sport mode it wasn't as bad but still noticeable. I started thinking transfer box after reading some threads on here, but mine turned out to be that the n/s/r calliper had ceased (also noticeable by disc running at 286 degrees when I checked it!!) New calliper fitted and judder has gone. I also had o/s/r one replaced under warranty as lasted 10months and o/s/r outer pad was basically only the shoe left and had resulted in a heavily scored disc !!! Why they don't put sensors on all 4 'corners' I'll never know. Steve

I changed both rear calipers when one was sticking. The calipers were quite reasonably priced by the dealer (70 Euro each) with trade-in of the old calipers. There are a lot of internet based businesses and I bet Duckworth Dan can give you a good price and fast shipping. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

Mine have just been delivered by Brakeparts, excellent service and price. Thats this afternoons job sorted. Hoping it will sort it as I was thinking the worst and fearing it was drivetrain related! Shocked Lloyd Barnes

Well, the new discs, pads and caliper are on.. and the noise is gone!! Very Happy

Definitely worth checking yours Kingpleb as the symptoms you describe are exactly what I was getting. Started out fairly quiet and sporadic but got worse over a few days. By then the difference in pad thickness was very easy to see. Lloyd Barnes

Proved the theorem last night gents, it appears the rear pass side calliper is sticking after the car is washed at low temps... Think I'll order a refurb kit from brakesint and strip it and see what's up or buy another calliper depending on the price of the kit..

Thanks guys Smile

The test was simple enough, after a 20min drive poor some water on the rear calipers and if one steams and sizzles its then stuffed as the other side shouldn't be so bad as the rear brakes do really do burger all under normal braking.. FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

I seem to have picked up something similar. Last week I noticed that the rear brake discs were badly worn with quite a lip, so had made a note to get new discs and pads.

I haven't driven the car for a while as it's my wife's and I spend the weekends drunk mostly Shocked but I did drive it last weekend. At about 60mph the car starts to shudder. First thought was the wife's knocked the wheels out of alignment or lost a weight, but it does't seem to be coming through the steering or from the front suspension, almost as if you feel it through your backside. It's very noticeable and I wonder if I too have a sticking rear calliper, particularly given the state of the rear discs!

Any other ideas or things I should look for?
