FBH Fault....

Big Cry

Lookers just came and collected my FF. They're looking into the problem with the cabin heater / FBH. I've agreed they can keep the car at least 2 or three days (they want some cold mornings apparently).

This is the first real test of the Warranty Direct Platinum warranty ... any bets on whether the WD people will cover it?

I'll report back once its fixed.

In the meantime, I'm driving my Audi again. Graham

It silly too, as they treat the FBH as a sealed unit - if it don't work, it's replaced. Yet they are relatively simple little bits.

When I was going to law school in Munich I earned my keep as an automotive electrician (strange combination, I know). The shop I worked at installed and repaired these things. I even took part in a 3 day long training seminar at Webasto (just outside of Munich) who make these FBH for most of the OEMs. Not difficult units to understand or repair (motor or transmission is much more complex). Not much more than some electronics, a fuel pump, glow plug and a housing for the flames (and water pump/hoses).

And these days everything is diagnosed via electronics - we still did it by hand.

As I said: silly.

LR technicians are not trained for repairing anything these days.

1. Diagnose faulty part
2. read LR workshop manual on how to do the job
3. Replace faulty part
4. Pray you did it right.

did they explain why they wanted cold mornings?

if they give you story that the warm temperatures are causing the FBH to not operate properly, then they are spinning you a story. The ambient temperature does not effect the duration of the FBH cycle.

Big Cry

It's bust. £1300 to replace it of which £1100 is the part. Warranty Direct don't want to know.

Anyone a contact for a Webasto repairer? Graham

If you do a quick search on google there is a VERY good guide on how to tear it down and repair it.

What part of it is faulty? odd's on the glowplug or the electronic module Sad

PaulB, it's "not in the list of covered items". Which it isn't... wonder what else isn't covered?

kingpleb, yes, but I'm no mechanic, I don't mind paying someone to fix it but I simply don;t have £1300. Graham

Mine's bust as well Sad Well technically it isn't, it has a wiring fault which is preventing it working but warranty is covering it. Loom on order. Thumbs Up

Anyhow, the thing is a simple enough matter to get out and fix. It's a bloody fire for chrissakes, albeit enclosed in a container. I've fixed dozens like it in the form of truck night heaters. There's even a few on EBAY who will recondition them for you, usually the cost of parts (sod all) and a couple of hours labour.

Go on, get the spanners out, you know it makes sense Rodders. Seriously, £1300 ?? Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter Bring the thing to me. I'll do you a £300 quid discount, call it a flat grand. Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter Be the easiest grand I ever made.

Whats the actual fault with it though fella?

If its going to get chucked afterwards i wouldn't mind having it so i could service it and learn a bit from it if that would be ok with you??

Can it be removed without draining coolant and stuff? And run teh car happily with it missing? Might be something in this. Graham

Yes. Clamp pipes while removing. Fit a bridging piece of copper pipe temporarily. Thumbs Up

You would lose some coolant but you could get a standard joiner pipe and just loop that section of the colling circuit to bypass it.

This is a method often used on cars where heater matrix's are leaking and are a real biatch to replace. Commonly happens on older Xantias that are run into the ground as its quoted at 12hours to replace the unit... Took me 2 days on my own to do mine Sad
