I'm sure that my headlights aren't as bright (and are perhaps becoming more yellow/ less of a blue tint) as they were a year ago - do the HID's eventually dim and need replacing ?

I was told once by local LR Service Dept they are supposed to have an expected life span of 15000hrs??? - im not sure how correct this information might be

When I had a fault on my headlamps (headlights flickering), it turned out to be the headlight ballast packs that were knackered (silver box fitted on the rear of headlight unit)

However, I do have 2 x spare PHILIPS XENON D2S 35W - 85122 bulbs (unused) if you are interested - £25 each

(a bargain, considering I paid £200+ from the stealers!!! - a contribution to site will be made if sold)

^^^ Sorry to hear that Simon. As I mentioned above - its most likely the flickering lights will be caused by your headlamp ballast resistor packs failing and not the actual bulbs themselves.

These packs are fitted to the rear of each headlamp unit (small bare metal box about same size as a pack of cards / fag packet)

Despite only being screwed onto the light unit with 4 x small torx screws and quite easy to remove - they are not sold separately and you will have to buy a complete headlamp unit if you need a new one - at least that is what I was told by the LR dealer

My lights played up for a few weeks before failing completely...

...Fortunately, this allowed me enough time to source a couple of used Xenon headlights via eBay for a few hundred quid - rather than the £1200+ Stratstones wanted for new ones ...

...Unfortunately Stratstones wouldn't consider allowing me to return the new bulbs I had purchased beforehand and never actually used or needed in the first place

VV ,they do seem to do that, i replaced mine with cheapo 6000k bulbs of ebay and the difference was dramatic...much brighter and whiter..

The bulbs drop in output and go pink when they fail - the ballast apparently affects the shutter that sits over the bulb and drops when you select high beam.
Dealers do want mega money for these although they are available elsewhere far cheaper - ensure you buy the same temperature bulbs as on the other side or you will have different intensity lights. '96 Volkswagen Polo 1.4CL - SOLD

You can get both the ballast and the ignitors seprately.

When mine played up (mine was the ignitor inside the light, not the ballast on the back) I contacted these guys with the part numbers
