Sorry, I have no idea what they change for cars here in the Gulf, But I do know they are different, I would think they have better rubber gaitors to keep the sand out of the moving joints and better air filters.

Ooops sorry, I never had my glasses on! what a wally! anyway, do you know what I should be looking out for when I look at or purchase this 2003 Range Rover HSE 4.6 model. I don't want to go to meet this guy and not know what the common faults are. It's going to cost me one hundred and forty pounds to have it checked in the garage too!

I would check suspension thoroughly for cracks in the rubber bags, raising time (should be about 15 sec min to max), compressor noise (it's under the spare wheel), put the car in off-road mode, stop the engine and leave it for 1/2 hour then check if it sits evenly. I'm sure someone with the same engine will give you tips on that but I would drive for a while and listen for noises and see if gear changes are smooth. Watch for messages in the dashboard, warning lights, etc. Drive on uneven terrain and listen for knocks and squeaks. Check aircon temperature and see if the electric fan starts after a few minutes. Check coolant level, oil leaks... Check electric windows and sunroof. See if seat heating works. Check silver trim on doors and console. This also gives a clue about the age of the car and the habits of the previous owner. This car is basically a computer on wheels with air suspension so there are hundreds of things that can go wrong... Otherwise, as Jeremy Clarkson says, it's the best car in the world. Good luck! |

Thank you for your quick response, I am being told that the Land Rover garage will check out the car by using the chasis number and they will hook it up to a computer as well, so I guess that will give me a good indication of it's condition.

Colin, are you sure this is an L322 RR and not a P38 - the L322's have never had a 4.6 engine in them but the P38's have, sorry oh and welcome |

Yes, the Petrol V8 in the L322 model is the BMW 4.4, is this what you meant? Discovery 4 HSE

Speaking of all those checks it sounds like a P38.

maybe one of the last P38s - in which case stay well away. Or maybe the ad is wrong, but as said above, no L322 RR has the old 4.6 engine. |

Uh-huh. And the LM is really that much more reliable? BS. If condition and price are OK, you're just about as well off in a P38 as a 6 year old LM. The ad does sound a bit wacky: the P38 was last built in MY2001, never had xenons (xenon bulbs added to halogen lights are poop), the original nav didn't have TV or aux in, and I wonder what the rear AC, sensor, and double gear are supposed to be (transfer box hi/lo?). I'm not sure what 'gulf spec' is either although I have read that the BeCM (body electrics) settings were very different including disabling of the alarm - but that could be hearsay. Check Rangerovers.net for a quite comprehensive buyers guide and have a PPI done by a competent mechanic. RRC 2Dr, RRC 4Dr, P38, and 2 L322s (wife thinks I'm nuts - prob right, too) |
