Towing electrics not working

I recently fitted a towbar and genuine LR twin socket electrics but nothing works and I am completely stumped.

The electrics loom ends in 3 bits that go inside the car - a white connector, a black connector and a small relay type thing. I plugged the white Siemens control module into the black connector and the white one I connected to a white plug which was the only thing that it could connect to under the right side panel in the boot. The relay is just hanging around in there as it didn't look as though I should connect it to anything.

Without a trailer attached there are no problems with the electrics and no messages showing so I assume that it is correctly wired.

When I attach a trailer none of the trailer lights will work, the suspension still moves up and down and the rear parking sensors still work. I get a message up saying "Check trailer electrics" which disappears after a few seconds so it is registering something.

Does anyone know what might be wrong? Does it need programming by a dealer? I thought it was plug and play.

Isn't the white Siemens box the towing module?

No, as I thought that was just a failsafe and there were earth in the main connectors. I'll attach them and try again.

I've checked all the fuses, unplugged and replugged everything but now it's getting ridiculous.

The display is telling me that I'm in trailer mode, suspension is locked and rear PDC is off but...... there is no trailer plugged in!!!!

Haven't had a chance to plug in a known working trailer board yet so I don't know if the main problem is fixed.

Anyone got any ideas? Question

Can't try another socket but I'll pull this one apart and see if the connections are all good.

There's no corrosion in the socket causing shorts circuits from terminal to terminal by any chance?

I checked for shorts across all the terminals and there were none. Continuity up all the cables was fine so I plugged it all back together and now it works fine.

Don't know what was going on there but at least the problem has gone away.

What does that relay do? If that was sticking open or closed would it trick the car into thinking that something was connected?

Interesting they obviously changed the loom at some point; my loom, which I bought second hand, doesn't have a relay at all.
