Tow Bar Electrics

i am looking for some help please.

when i bought the FFRR is was fitted with a towbar and twin electrics. my caravan has the single 13 pin euro socket on it, so i took it to my local fitter and got him to convert things to a single 13 pin socket etc etc.

all the lights etc etc work, but everytime i connect the caravan, an inline fuse keeps blowing and as far as i can figure out it cuts power for my anti sway unit on the caravan.

i don't know why this happens, it was fitted with a 10 amp fuse and i have just upped it to 15 amp to see how it goes as i am towing the van back to storage tomorrow.

i was thinking that maybe genuine L/R electrics might be a better bet as they plug and play. my kit seems to be a mass of wires, joins and electrical tape.

could someone who has genuine electrics maybe take a picture or two for me please of how things connect in the boot area. i only seem to have one plug and it is not being used. if the genuine plugs have been cut off i will have to go to plan b!!

any help would be greatfully received.... Thumbs Up Current: TDV8 (3.6) RRS HSE

Here you go. Main connector circled in green and the supplementary relay is arrowed in green.

You need to buy the Genuine LR electrics for the 13pin euro plug. This a short length of loom that coverts everything for you. Then you can rest assured that everything will work as LR intended...

thanks for the replies guys, especially Dom for the fab picture!!

i am going out to see if i have these two plugs still intact now.

i know the white module next to the main plug is the towing module, but what is the black one up above it?? is this related to the towing electrics too?

thanks again guys.. Bow down Bow down Current: TDV8 (3.6) RRS HSE

just been out to car, i seem to have the main white plug, but it isn't being used just hanging free. don't seem to have smaller black plug though. is that part of the L/R loom that i will be adding in?

there are a couple of large scotch lock type things clipped onto my main loom and these are then connected to what i presume are the generic towing modules which are placed in the boot under the tow ball holder.

if there are only the two plugs supposed to be in the boot and everything else comes with the kit i should be able to manage to sort things out with a bit of fiddling about.

thanks again. Current: TDV8 (3.6) RRS HSE

OK, the black module you refer to is nothing to do with towing electrics.

The relay comes as part of the towing loom.

Do yourself a massive favour; order a loom from one of the site sponsors, either Yeovil LR or Duckworths. Less than 100 quid delivered is what I paid. Take the stuff that you have off and fit the proper kit. Actual fitting takes no more than half an hour. Thumbs Up

Dom.

i just need to remove the generic stuff and have a tidy up.

You will also need the proper towing module which is another £55 ish quid but is the black box in the picture above about 1-2" to the left of the white plug. It's a simple job to fit but take out the spare wheel and get some old carpet to lay on while you try an feed the fecka thru the tiny hole in the body and seal it right!

Softer the rubber up with some very warm water and then put some Vaseline around the lip part of it and it should be simple to fit then. Also to route the cable right you will need to take out the wheel chocks and the plastic an carpet in that corner of the car starting with the tie down hook Smile

i bought a genuine set of twin electrics complete with towing module last night from ebay, sorry if i beat you for these!!... Embarassed

the only thing is it has a 12s and 12n socket on it, and i want it to be 13 pin.

i presume that if i plug it into the car to check that everything works first, then make a note of what colour wire goes into what pin and check voltage with a meter, i should be able to rewire to a single 13 pin socket from the two that are on it originally.

does that sound like a plan?? Current: TDV8 (3.6) RRS HSE

You should be fine fitting the 13 pin plug yourself. The FFRR does not have a switched socket like some others (Mercs) so a standard socket can be wired on. The genuine ones are filled with potting resin to keep the moisture out though so you might want to do this yourself. Oh, and buy a high quality socket with stainless contacts, not the cheapie brass thing.

Dom.

Provided there are no redundant wires from the loom you shouldn't have any problems. Thumbs Up
