My 2003 range rover has been faultless on a recent trip to cornwall covering 850 miles over a 9 day period unitl an 80 mile journey 1 day....and when i arived at the destination the car seemed to over rev to move when i was undertaking a 3 point turn. i stopped the car and parked up as i had arrived. 1 hour later i set off on a short journey and i only made it 1 mile before the message ''trans failsafe prog'' came on the dash so i decided to turn around and drive back but again sturggled for the car to move when completing a 3 point turn as it required more revs than usual for it to move, i managed to turn the car and when i came to a standstill and placed the car in park for a minute i thought i would give it another go... the car just rolled backwards when in drive!!! so i phoned the AA.

After waiting 1 hour 20 mins for them to come the aa guy did a few checks but then started the car and it drove perfect with no trans failsafe message on the dash.

Not sure what to do ,, we arranged for the car to come home on the back of a trailer and it is due at a local independant LR garage tomorow morning. I have had a brief conversation with the garage and they said it is probably a torque converter and worst case scenario is £3500 !! I said blimey, the car drives ok once it had been stood, wouldnt it just not drive if something major had gone?

Any ideas anyone? i have read a few posts where some have got lucky? and just changed the inhibitor switch.

What should i ask the garage to look for before just wanting to do a major job at a major price! I have looked at the garages website and they have the Autologic diagnostic system so should be ok???

This can be caused by electrical voltage variances, sometimes a weak battery or other electrical fault can throw up this fault. It may e nothing to do with the gear box.

I had this message show up once very briefly several thousand miles ago, nothing since. I did a bit of searching on Internet, it can be caused by many things. Sorry I can't help anymore. No longer FF owner but still interested. Present car Jaguar XE

Further info. When the trans failsafe triggers it locks the car in gear (3rd I think), this enables you to limp home. The idea being that if there is less damage to the faulty gearbox/transmission by sticking in one gear.

The problem is that whilst a faulty gearbox can trigger this fault, any number of electrical gremlins can also cause the car to think it has a gearbox problem. Similar to a low battery can cause various faults to show up on the car on startup.

Hopefully an electrical problem will be cheaper to repair than a gearbox problem. Good luck. No longer FF owner but still interested. Present car Jaguar XE

There is also a gearbox reset with will return it to original settings and re-learn your driving style and wear in the box. something along the lines of: open car and get it, push acc pedal into kickdown and hold there, then turn key to position 1, then back then 1, then 2 and leave for 30 sec still with pedal hard down then release. do a search and you will find the full correct version. [img]http://www.fuelly.com/driver/rob2529/range-rover[img/]

If something can't be fixed with a hammer....... You have yourself an electrical fault!

I had very similar behaviour a couple of years ago, loss of drive etc, then after stopping for a while everything was OK again. Then one day it just went, fortunately I was only a mile from home and was able to make it onto the drive before it completely died and the gearbox seized up.

Sorry to be the harbinger of doom but my next step was a replacement gearbox

You may have luck if you do an oil change on the box, but your symptoms may well be that your 'box is on its way out  .

Where did you get your gearbox done? I only ask as you dont live far from me and if this happens to me I have wondered if there is anyone local(ish) ? Reformed

I had to get the car trailered from home so it just went straight to Harwoods main dealer in Basingstoke for a new one (Route 1 for expediency and I work up that way). If I had had more time I would have possibly used an auto trans specialist in Southampton (http://www.autotranservices.co.uk) or there is a good company in Kent: JT Automatics (www.automatic-gearbox.co.uk) but what I may have saved in LR prices would possibly be lost in transport / time and trouble. .

I had this on mine and it was the inhibitor switch, never had it again after the switch was replaced.

If you get the fault code read this should give you a better idea what is causing the message and limp home mode. L322 2002 4.4 V8 LPG

Bah, post holiday blues for my FFRR as on the way to work this morning I got the dreaded TRANS. FAILSAFE PROG. message and the accompanying ding. On and off it went 4 times and then locked the box. I pulled over, switched off then started up again, no fault and carried on. OK for another 20 miles then it started dinging at me, three or four times again. Was in an under 50mph zone and the fault did not lock in again before I got to work - although message left on dash when I switched off. It was a cool damp morning this morning? Will see how we go on the way home tonight. .

That wasn't a fun journey home. 22 miles and a message ding every 30 seconds, with all sorts of odd behaviour from the box. Didn't seem to want to find a gear / any gear and would falter and stumble along eventually. I set out to amble home at 56mph so as not to put any strain on anything. First ding didn't happen until about two miles into the journey. The gearbox never locked into third, it was as if it was sorting itself out and then breaking again.

Seems only option is to a) try replacing the inhibitor switch b) put into stealers for full assessment..... .
