I thought this still had to be coded with a faultmate MSV Question

I have a 2007 Range Rover with heated steering wheel so do not have the additional circuits available through the "clock spring" as JLR call it, BUT studying the wiring diagrams I could see that the heated steering wheel wiring has a seperate ground and 12v supply wire (from the ignition) to the normal steering wheel switches. This is to allow it to be fused seperately I guess.

Normal swiches are off a 5 amp fuse and the steering heating off a 10 amp fuse. SO by using the ground and supply wires for the heated steering wheel only (wiring the normal switches across to this supply on the steering wheel side) I was able to free off two tracks from front to back to use for the paddle shifts. Makes the 5 amp fuse redundant and the 10A fuse is large enough.

Hence you CAN fit paddle shifts to older cars with a heated steering wheel with the existing hardware - no need for RF remotes etc. Much easier!

Would a MY07 not have a CAN BUS link from the steering wheel controls, or was this left on the old Beemer iBUS system until the MY10 wheel change?

According to the wiring diagrams the 2007 is still iBus (called DS2 bus in IDS), no CAN to the steering wheel until 2010 with the new buttons etc.

Yes. So that means plug n play to me, ie no hardware modification required. You plug in the paddles and tell the car they exist, and they work

Ah so not plug and play for most since a faultemate MSV costs the best part of £1000 unless you can find someone with a multi-vehicle licence which for 2010MY is probably rarer than an uncooked steak Laughing

I think this mod can wait Rolling Eyes

Our opinions of what is classed as "plug & play" must differ then as I have always felt that to be plug and play you just plug it in and it works - such as upgrading a tv tuner from analogue to digital.

Having to then hook up a faultmate MSV (or equivalent), read the CCF, find the correct section and change the option to say paddle shift is fitted, save and rewrite the CCF, for most does not constitute plug and play. An easy job to retrofit the paddles - agreed - but its a bit more than plug and play. Whistle

pretlove - I also have reservations as to an indi having a 2010MY licence as why would they need one yet with all vehicles still under warranty? I am happy to be proved wrong though Wink

It would still be worth a call as you never know there maybe a few 2010MY owners that might want flappy paddles Laughing

Essex is not too far - just not a regular stomping ground for me Whistle

there are other reasons (apart from paddles) for me buying a faultmate with a 2010 license.

Stuff the dealers can't (or won't ) do:

1) daytime driving lights enable/disable
2) service indicator enable
3) nav on the go (although I cant get this working yet Sad )
4) alarm chirp on
5) modify TPMS settings (so far with little effect Big Cry)
6) because I actually use my vehicle offroad in countries in Africa where there is no support available

had some time over the weekend so i thought i would go back and tidy up the paddle shift change install, when i started it with matt it was more trile and error to get things wright, it was soon apparent that the wires could not be added to the slip ring so we had to go with the idea of the wireless way,
my install was a little messy and used the battery supplied, i wanted to hard wire it and remove the battery and find, what had been a prob for a few people including my self the best place to put the tx with out damaging it.

i used a plug so i could if needed unplug the tx unit, left the black ground wire loose so i could fix it to ground via a screw

use the correct colour wires, this is a big no,no i hate using wrong colour wires but sometimes you just go with what you have at the time

then covered the whole unit with a thick heat shrink, again i used masking tape the first time round as it was all i had.

i used a flat 4 way computer connector, from maplins, on the end of the paddel loom, and after finding a good place to mount the tx board the loom needed no modding.

a little bit of double sided tape to hold the connector in the right place

this time i did take the wheel of, it made it far easier to get it right, the air bag fits just fine, just need to connect the red to the live on the heated wheel and screw the ground down.
this turned out to be one of the best mods i have done, its a simple and cheap mod and you end up with great extra, :D
