Planning next move…..

So, this is gonna be a bit random… on the 10th year with my L322 and I still love it, but time moves on and I like to have a bit of a plan what to do next, so thinking out loud…..

Def want to stay V8, but given I’ve done only 6000 miles since the start of 2020 I’m thinking a 5.0 Supercharged might be the way to go. Also considering an RRS (I know, wash my mouth out 🤣) but I like the look of them and might be more suited to that engine, though I’ve never been in an L405 or an L494. I was never too keen on the black pack with black wheels etc, but in another twist, I think I quite like it, depending on colour.

There is an advert come up on FB for an LR specialist in Lincolnshire and whilst it’s for servicing and repairs etc, not sales, they have the below pic and I think the outside colour combo looks really good…

Or say….

When did LR fix the timing chain guide issue on the 5.0 SC?

Has anyone spent time with the 405 and 494 who can compare?

Not bothered about an SVR as I think they are a bit showy and as I have to park on drive might be a bit too attractive to those fancying it without paying. I want the signature hifi and see a few RRS with it, but less speakers than 405.

Maybe I need to go another route like Cayenne Turbo etc, but they won’t be like being in an RR……

I’m sure a few of you might have been thinking similar at some point……

What you all recon?

Absolutely loved my L320 RRS 3.6 TDV8. It was a 2010 and really nice inside.

I agree though on the 5.0 SC in a RRS, a sportier engine in a sportier car.

Can’t be doing with black wheels on any car. Silver looks much classier and less gangsta.

Love my L322 even more than the L330 though and would only go back if I was getting one for SWMBO.

Thanks Pete…. And next door has a 2015 3.0 RRS and said the same so at least that’s an option to look at both without any commitment. Plus I’m thinking there will come a time when there are no big gas guzzling V8’s allowed so having one now might be a good idea.

Keep fancying RS4 or RS6, but I fancied those when I bought the 4.4 so guess I like RR too much.

Not ruled out an SDV8 but due to low miles I do now….

I see Audi do a V12 diesel, but fairly rare…

I’m in exactly the same position, thinking about what to do when the 322 becomes uneconomical to maintain; I’ve absolutely loved my 322 and the 4.4 is a brilliant engine. I also only like the 405 in certain colours, red or green, wouldn’t have any other colour; I’m also considering a SC as a last blast big V8.

I too would be interested in peoples opinions about switching to a SC - I’m aware I’ll be spending a lot of time at the pumps.

I did it last year and don’t regret it. I don’t use the car as a daily, so the fuel consumption isn’t such an issue for me. The engine is amazing. 2024 - 2021MY L405 5.0 SC Portofino Blue

Traded my L322 for an 2019 sdv8 sport ……… Big Cry

Careful what you wish for… everyone loves the sport , been approached by strangers in the street saying my it’s stunning Rolling Eyes it has all the toys, lovely place to be, but certainly isn’t a L322. In a nutshell it’s dull…. Sporty feel and uncomfortable then there’s the regen issues….. when you drive the L322 it made you feel regal, and wafted along…..
Currently looking at L405 ……….S/C is the way to go I think. Concerned they will still be a bit dull to drive, but trying to find a nice L322 is hard work!

I toyed with idea of a L405 before getting my L322 5.0. The engine guides were updated around 2014 I believe so would need to go 2015 to be sure? For me the tech in the early 405’s would drive me mad, I knew it would be v old in the 322 but at least it’s small and easy to upgrade or replace. That made me look at 2017’s and then it got too expensive….i wish mine was a little louder exhaust wise, but was near a SVR on Friday and that was too much - even for me (think must have been an after market exhaust). 2010 Supercharged

I agree with barbel Jim. My RR Sport has been the worst LR I’ve ever owned. Admittedly tarnished by the fact it’s been a total lemon, but even if it had been reliable I would say the same.

When driving an L322 or L405 you feel special, in a Sport you just don’t. It feels small and uncomfortable. There are so many different (cheaper) options that will do what a Sport can do. But finding a vehicle that feels like a Full Fat is a lot harder. My D4 was the only thing that came close.

Thanks for your input so far folks. I did imagine that the L494 and L405 might have been a bit closer given they share the same platform. Obviously in the last generation they were very different beasts.

Seems the 5.0 SC might be the more logical choice, given the low mileage I do now.

I def like the more squat look of the Sport but if it’s compromised too much in other areas, might not be a good step from an L322.

The Sport also seems a very similar weight to the 405, so no real advantage there either.

I remember in one of Clarkson's articles, he was discussing MK3 Cortinas. L, GL, GXL, Ghia, etc. And he commented that for the blokes in an L, if they had worked a little bit harder and sold more photocopiers or whatever, they could have had a GL, or even a GXL.

That's kind of how I look at Sports now. There's no other reason I can see for buying one other than you couldn't run to a Full Fat (as a bloke).

A pal of mine has a L494 SVR, looks nice enough, but I sat in it and wondered why he didn't buy the bigger one. 2017 4.4 SDV8 Autobiography in black

I can’t see myself in a sport, so it’s a red or green 405 SC - probably 2016 onwards - or maybe a late disco or a new(ish) defender.
Come to think of it, I’d have a 4.4 again so maybe the full fat love affair will go on once the 322 has had it.

I had a 494 Sport and now have a 405, they are surprisingly different, I like them both for different reasons but, now having had the 405 for a year and 15k miles, I would not want to go back to a sport.

The sport is more of a drivers car, the 405 in autobiography spec is way more luxurious and comfortable and simply a very nice place to be, all-round a very relaxing car to drive, the sport does what it says on the tin, sharper more responsive and invites you to drive it enthusiastically.
