So, this is gonna be a bit random… on the 10th year with my L322 and I still love it, but time moves on and I like to have a bit of a plan what to do next, so thinking out loud…..
Or say…. ![]() When did LR fix the timing chain guide issue on the 5.0 SC? Has anyone spent time with the 405 and 494 who can compare? Not bothered about an SVR as I think they are a bit showy and as I have to park on drive might be a bit too attractive to those fancying it without paying. I want the signature hifi and see a few RRS with it, but less speakers than 405. Maybe I need to go another route like Cayenne Turbo etc, but they won’t be like being in an RR…… I’m sure a few of you might have been thinking similar at some point…… What you all recon? ![]() Previous cars : 2003 Range Rover Vogue TD6 1999 Discovery Td5 ES 1995 BMW M5 3.8 6 speed 1992 Range Rover 3.9 Efi Vogue 1992 BMW M5 3.8 1988 BMW 735i SE 1989 Ford Sierra XR4x4 2.9i 1981 Ford Fiesta Supersport |

Thanks Pete…. And next door has a 2015 3.0 RRS and said the same so at least that’s an option to look at both without any commitment. Plus I’m thinking there will come a time when there are no big gas guzzling V8’s allowed so having one now might be a good idea.

I’m in exactly the same position, thinking about what to do when the 322 becomes uneconomical to maintain; I’ve absolutely loved my 322 and the 4.4 is a brilliant engine. I also only like the 405 in certain colours, red or green, wouldn’t have any other colour; I’m also considering a SC as a last blast big V8.

I did it last year and don’t regret it. I don’t use the car as a daily, so the fuel consumption isn’t such an issue for me. The engine is amazing. 2024 - 2021MY L405 5.0 SC Portofino Blue

I toyed with idea of a L405 before getting my L322 5.0. The engine guides were updated around 2014 I believe so would need to go 2015 to be sure? For me the tech in the early 405’s would drive me mad, I knew it would be v old in the 322 but at least it’s small and easy to upgrade or replace. That made me look at 2017’s and then it got too expensive….i wish mine was a little louder exhaust wise, but was near a SVR on Friday and that was too much - even for me (think must have been an after market exhaust). 2010 Supercharged |

I agree with barbel Jim. My RR Sport has been the worst LR I’ve ever owned. Admittedly tarnished by the fact it’s been a total lemon, but even if it had been reliable I would say the same.

Thanks for your input so far folks. I did imagine that the L494 and L405 might have been a bit closer given they share the same platform. Obviously in the last generation they were very different beasts.

I remember in one of Clarkson's articles, he was discussing MK3 Cortinas. L, GL, GXL, Ghia, etc. And he commented that for the blokes in an L, if they had worked a little bit harder and sold more photocopiers or whatever, they could have had a GL, or even a GXL.

I can’t see myself in a sport, so it’s a red or green 405 SC - probably 2016 onwards - or maybe a late disco or a new(ish) defender.

I had a 494 Sport and now have a 405, they are surprisingly different, I like them both for different reasons but, now having had the 405 for a year and 15k miles, I would not want to go back to a sport.

If you're ever up in God's country, i'll take you for a spin. The 565 SC is staggeringly good. You know it makes sense |
