L322 Lower Control Arms

Hi all,
I once again need to replace the lower arms on my L322. I have done this several times and none seem to last very long. If anyone knows of any that seem to last a bit longer it would be appreciated!

I fit Lemforder whenever possible although the bush in the front rear arm never lasts long where I drive.

I think Lemforder were the original ones fitted, I always use them to replace mine and have not had any problems. But.... I only go off road when towing a horse box so the car is treated very gently when off road. Also, if you have the tools and the arms are in good nick, the original Lemforder bushes by themselves are quite cheap. Thumbs Up

As a side note - I once read on here that when fitting new arms, final torque should be applied to the fasteners once the weight of the vehicle is back on the wheels / ground, or this can lead to premature failure / wear on the bushes. Please correct me anyone if this is wrong.

Absolutely correct, if the bolts are torqued up with the lower arms 'hanging' in the air (i.e. with the vehicle jacked up), then they'll wear out really fast as the rubber bushes are abnormally twisted when the vehicle is on the ground and at it's normal ride height. They need to be assembled in the air, and finally tightened with the vehicle's weight on the wheels / hub. Then the rubber twisting action only happens when the suspension is articulated.

Lemforder is quality stuff and highly recommended. 1992 RR Classic 3.9 efi Vogue

Lemforder is always my go-to brand. I killed some Britpart rubbish in less than 1K in Australia on my 110 Isuzu County. Since then I've always gone with Lemforder.

I noticed some lower arm rear bushes the other day (admittedly for a Disco 4), which didn't have the 'hydraulic' design, maybe they're more robust / heavier duty and similar is available for the L322?

I can find a link if that helps?

So glad to know that I was correct about the sequence to torque up the suspension arms fasteners, which means I got it right this time.......makes a change Whistle Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter Thumbs Up

Meyle make HD rubber D3/D4 bushes but D3/D4 bushes aren't the correct size. However early BMW X5 bushes are and HD Meyle X5 bushes are available so I tried a pair for a short while but didn't like the harshness they caused. I had previously acquired 2 different sets of poly bushes which I've not fittted at all after finding the Meyle bushes too harsh. I've resigned to replacing the Lemforder bushes regularly as my best option short of replacing the vehicle with a L405 with IMO their better front suspension design.

Yeah, I've read that the non-hydraulic (i.e. solid rubber) bushes are a bit harsher - stands to reason really. Didn't realise they were Meyle, not perrsonally keen on that brand. Think I saw them on Advanced Factors website.

The same author discussing additional harshness (on AULRO I think it was) said that Polybushes were even worse - which would seem right!

L405 design is more modern with the double wishbones, but more fragile it would seem, based on the ever-growing thread about knuckle cracking! Not sure how that'd go on the corrugations!

The Meyle HD BMW bushes aren't solid. They're of similar design to the LR version but more rubber, less air space and possibly a different rubber compound.

Mine's rear lower wishbone bushes have slop - ad-hoc rear-end steering isn't appreciated. The rear bush is reportedly a hydro bush and quite expensive compared with the front bush, especially Lemforder, which is another suspended centre style. Solid rear bushes are available at around the same price as the front bush and whilst a Chinese version at around half the price of genuine is also available, I've stuck with the genuine rear bush. Lemforder rear bush seems to no longer be produced but I don't know if it was hydro or just rubber.

I've not read of any L405 knuckle issues with Australian vehicles, possbily due to the generally dryer and probably warmer climate. Currently there's a couple of nice, low km MY21.5 D350 L405s for sale but can't quite afford one yet so have to keep replacing bushes and shocks on the L322 as needed.
