Well done Nino Nino that looks just like the official LR tool Smile As I had my Leica Laser measurement gadget anyway I didn't put the stick on it, and as per my early describe just a bit of cardboard at the hub centre to get that measurement spot on.

Just gone to calibrate mine with the IID tool. Started front left, on the screen where I press the arrow up or down until centre of wheel is 493mm from wheel arch. I pressed the upward arrow as it was a fair way off. It lifted, there was a knocking noise & it came back down to where it was pretty suddenly. I looked inside the arch, airbag still inflated. Couldn’t see anything obviously amiss.

Anyone experienced this before? Any ideas? Don’t really want to try again as it was quite a knock and I don’t want to do any more damage.

It’s had a lot of work done to it. It’s spent a long time with wheels in the air, done the suspension arms, track rod ends & ball joints. Done the ride height sensors too. Had a good look around & didn’t see anything else that wanted doing while I was in there 🤷🏻‍♂️. Wondering if it’s a suspension strut issue. '95 VW Corrado VR6

If you have lift rods installed is there a way to calibrate the suspension?
Would you just add 50.8mm (2” lift rods) to the baseline numbers (463 fronts / 483 rears) or just make sure they all match side to side?

Or, are are you unable to recalibrate?

I got to the first stage of recalibration on the programme. So the procedure is to measure centre of wheel from wheel arch, and press the up or down button in the app until the measurement is 493mm. The app takes you through it step by step.

But when I pressed the upward button for the front passenger side it started to lift, then there was quite a loud knock/bang and the corner kind of dropped back to where it was. Not a huge drop but it was alarming. It sounded like it got stuck on something or maybe the strut refused to move past a certain point. Would be a huge coincidence if both front are suddenly damaged following front end work which didn’t touch the struts at all.

I’ve gone back out and tried extended mode. Back end rises fine, front seems to have stayed put. The airbags are inflated. I just put that down to the fact I replaced the front ride height sensors and the ecu doesn’t know what height the front is at.

The suspension would work fine before I did all this work but there was a suspension error message. The compressor was running a lot when I got the car, so as part of the work I rebuilt all the valve blocks & the compressor. There was an error code for front passenger side height sensor so that’s why I replaced the pair. So for quite a while the whole system was empty, and I was conscious that I was jacking the car up a lot while the bags were empty and looking quite crumpled. Was worried I might damage them.

I don’t think this is related to a leaking airbag, as they were both inflated at the front. I’ll see if they still are in the morning. It’s the bang/knock and then the drop that I’m worried about. It did exactly the same thing twice, and is definitely not already at extended height.

Next plan is to try the calibration programme again, try front passenger side & expect it to do the same thing. Pretend it’s at the right height, confirm it and move to front driver side, see if that one will lift or if it does the same thing. If it does the same thing it suggests to me something is wrong with the way I did the front end setup, that would be strange as I’m certain I fitted all the front end stuff correctly, and I got the sensors round the right way. I didn’t touch anything else in the front wheel arches. When I jacked it up the front end seemed to drop all the way, put it this way I got the hub to 493mm away from the arch when I torqued up the bolts on the suspension arms, and to do that I jacked the hub from underneath to push it back to 493mm, so it was extended past that while jacked up. As you can tell I’ve been racking my brains all evening. '95 VW Corrado VR6

Maybe a silly thing but did you drive the vehicle at all, it might be just a case of moving it about for a bit and getting all new components to settle.
Does having the gearbox in neutral make any difference to the calibration, I had to do mine twice, the first time the front went up by 30 mm, not sure why, the second calibration got everything back to the right hight.

No I've not driven it yet. It was an MOT fail when I got it so this is me doing the final bits to get it ready. I plan to take it for a short test drive but I haven't got headlights fitted yet, waiting on replacements (I tried to restore the original lenses and made them worse!). May just run it up and down my drive this evening.

Good point though, and I'll see if putting it in neutral makes any difference. Definitely going to try lifting the front right later, see if that plays ball.

I am now wondering if I've damaged the airbag by jacking it up several times while it's been empty, and maybe once the bag extends to a certain level there's a split that lets air out. It's definitely not a hissing noise. But if it's a big tear then I guess it would make a more dramatic noise. There was some dust after it happened too, which says to me it could be air. But strange how the front end was still sat at the same level this morning, hadn't dropped at all i.e. bags partially inflated.

Will jack it up if the front right also does it, and have a good look to double check everything looks correct. I may end up replacing both front struts just to rule it out but I'm not at that point just yet. '95 VW Corrado VR6
