Some short to ground faults are caused by open circuit because the test detects 0V at the test point when 12V or thereabouts is the voltage when all is working.

Australia 2003 Range Rover HSE Td6 Java Black

Many electrical circuits in a Rangie are controlled by transistors that have a 4th pin that reports loading to a monitor inside the controlling module. Overloads (like shorts to ground) get detected immediately they occur and the controlling transistor is switched OFF before any damage occurs. Then the monitor invokes an alternative process (if possible) and flags the error.

eg, if a tail light is blown then a brake light will be fast flashed at ~50% pulse width to 'simulate' the tail light brightness.

bye. 2003 TD6, EGR delete, vortex crankcase breather update, performance chip, UHF 2 way, Android head unit, crash camera on dash, always-on rear view camera to mirror screen, LED DRL`s, Electric trailer brake controller. FSR replaced. Pulling 3T caravan all about Australia

WOW, thanks for that fellers
that puts a different light on every thing

am i right in thinking the fault would have to be in the BPM processor
every thing seems to work most of the time and the fault has not returned yet, fingers crossed RR 2005 4.4 petrol
