Yes, this is a common fault with the L405, 3 small bolts holding up that long & heavy motor are prone to snapping off:

and a lot more ......................right better start pricing up a replacement or try and find a refurbished one .the worst thing is rr is parked on a hill and cant steer it to move it so going to have to get a recovery truck to get it to a specialist to sort out...

I think the issue commonly is that the bolts shear in the casing ... which I dont fancy being fun to get out. V8 or else ... |

You may be very lucky, given it apparently wasn’t driven like that, but no more wheel twirling, eh?

Yes, more of a job for longer, warmer days, with lots of patience and time. “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” -where’s the fun in that? |

Ok just had a chance to have a look and yes it’s the bolts on the motor all 3 have snapped the last one is when looks like it has just gone ,I also found one of the bolts that hold the rack together has come out ….EVERYBODY CHECK YOUR RACKS…..so replacement steering rack it is …..was thinking of just replacing the motor but the only way I can see doing that is by lowering the sway bar and if I’m going to do that I may as well replace the bushes……..but I’m a bit concerned that the sway bar bolts ….what do you guys think

that’s one way of putting it …the electric motor is completely free of the rack ,where the drive belt is that part spilts from the rack so you can replace the belt well one of those bolts has come out as well ALL the bolts on the rack are the same as in aluminium 3 on the motor and i think 3 or 4 on the part .as for the price range rover price over 5k still looking around for other prices. |

Got some more photos from the corrosion this has been going on for some time was thinking of just replacing the motor but looking at the corrosion think it’s best to do the whole rack seen as the wife drives it as well and the grandkids …….and to think over Christmas we were on the motorway from Plymouth to darlington …….hate to think what would of happened at those speeds not good not good at all
