I am trying to figure out when my second turbo kicks in, as in driving down the motorway in auto mode and climbing the speed slowly up to say 100mph

I just cannot hear it, I hear the first turbo faintly with its weak high pitch whistle but when I say its faint, you really have to listen for it, but at what speed do you think the second turbo kicks in - I was expecting the turbo noise to be discernibly louder ?

I have a GAP IID, would it give me some data if the second turbo is working OK ?

Also is the primary turbo bigger than the secondary turbo ?

Second turbo doesn't activate untill about 2400rpm so even at 100mph it will still be at idle I would have thought.

It’s not speed, it’s rpm… / engine load / throttle position.

You will feel a good shove when it kicks in, keep your foot in it so it holds the gear. If you take your foot back it will change up and the revs will drop.

If you just drive on light throttle it won’t spin up..

Use the flappy paddles if you want to keep revs up without being so foot heavy …

OK, using the paddle gears I got to hear the second turbo, not as much extra oomphhh or noise as I was expecting, but its there sure enough, I also came onto the slip road of the motorway and maintained about 2800rpm for about 60 seconds to see how much smoke out of the back I could see, and nothing there, so that's a good sign

Have been told that its a good idea to get the secondary turbo to kick in every so often, especially if your normal drive or commute does not activate it !

Yes, I try and get mine going at least once every trip.

Car should be pretty quick if you let it rev to 4000 rpm plus etc… you should def feel the shove.

Flat torque curve
So no jump in power…but a linear increase in power with revs

Torque starts falling off rapidly after 3250 rpm
Mine feels as though it runs out of puff around 3500 rpm

For me…2500 - 3500 rpm is where the motor feels very comfortable for “making progress “

Use the second turbo daily when warm to keep the crossover valve working well….

Be carefull what you class as warm. The oil temp is what it important to get up to temp not the coolant. If you monitor oil temps with your GAP IID tool you will be suprised how long this takes esp on cold days. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)
