Battery and gearbox

Hi guys
I’ve got a question for you all can a weak battery cause my gearbox to play up at I’ve got a 2004 petrol v8 and I’ve noticed a slight judder sometimes but then I had to replace the battery and the judder seems to have gone

So my question is can a crap battery cause gearbox problems

Cheers Phil

I don’t believe so. The earlier ZF gearboxes are not known for their longevity in these heavy motors, though they are better than the GM box in the TD6.

Worth changing fluid?

I’m sure others will be along with a more useful answer….

A weak battery/low voltage can certainly cause issues with the ECUs e.g. TRANS. FAILSAFE PROG messages, etc. but I doubt it would cause a transmission judder. The most common cause of this with the 5HP24 is wear of the torque converter lock-up clutch friction plate. A fluid change, or friction modifiers added to the fluid, can produce a temporary improvement but ultimately the converter will require replacing/remanufacturing.

The most common condition for the judder (which can feel a bit like driving over a cattle grid) is up at slight incline at around 30mph, if it is the LUC at fault.
