That's exactly how I found out, being in the valleys full of hills. Put handbrake on a steeple hill junction, forgot I put it on as I was there a fair bit and accelerated to pull out and it moved off with no bong. So I tried the same again at some lights and thought what a result. |

I like to take it off manually, just me….. the car has a feature where if you come off the foot brake it holds pressure for a bit so you can get on the throttle without rolling back. That’s separate to the hand brake, but that prob does a similar thing to. Some clever stuff going on, most of which is probably to assist off roading.

I didn't even know it had hill hold feature either until you guys told me. I just thought it was the characteristics of it being an auto of not rolling. I have been using the auto release since I found out it can do it. Am I just being lazy not moving arm to do it myself? |

I’m not keen on that little time period where you press the throttle and the handbrake is still on. I’m sure it’s fine and can also work that way, as indeed does, but I don’t like keep doing it. In the same way that when I park up, I put the handbrake on with my foot still on the brake, gearbox into N, foot off brake (weight of car settles on handbrake) then I select P. I don’t like the weight of the car hanging on the gearbox, as it were…. But then I’m a bit set in my ways 🤣. Some folks just use P and never use the handbrake, not for me….

That's exactly what I do too Mj, like you I always put it in neutral then handbrake on. As I park on a slight incline outside the house I'm rather sure it will do it the world of good not resting on the gearbox in park. I always put it in neutral when I'm stationary at lights etc etc too. I was told many years ago by a very old school mechanic who did classic car restorations namely jaguar E-types, to put it in neutral when you are stationary so there's no unnecessary force on the gearbox, that was his number one rule with autos. |

If you have the handbrake on and the door is open it won’t automatically release. |

If you're using the brakes at the same time for any length of time then you're risking failure of the gearbox selector module. There's a 1 ohm resistor in the circuit for the rotory selector motor that is used to determine if the motor is drawing current by checking the voltage drop across the resistor. The resistor overheats if power is applied for too long, melting its solder which then stops the selector motor from working. The solder will crystilise if it almost melts then sets again which increases the resistance in the joint which causes the joint to overheat more quickly next time it starts to get hot. Neutral + brake pedal needs to be for only short periods. |
